Edwin Elias Gordon

Edwin Elias Gordon FORT DODGE, Iowa - Edwin E. Gordon 88, husband of the late Carol Gordon, died December 4, 2015. A native of Stamford, CT, his early studies in string bass performance were at the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY, where he completed both his bachelor's and master's degrees to be followed by further degrees from Ohio University in Athens, OH, and a Ph.D. at the University of Iowa. At Iowa, his interest in the learning process germinated and his publication HOW WE LEARN WHEN WE LEARN MUSIC became the first of more than 50 books, hundreds of articles and lectures both in the USA and abroad based on his research in developing music learning theory. There are GIML chapters, Gordon Institutes for Music Learning Theory throughout the East and Midwest USA and in 8 countries abroad. Dr. Gordon's Archive is housed in the Thomas Cooper Library at the University of South Carolina. Prior to coming to Columbia, Dr. Gordon held teaching positions at the University of Iowa and directed doctoral programs at the State University of New York at Buffalo, and Temple University in Philadelphia. He moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa, in 2014 to be closer to his daughters. He is survived by three daughters, Jaime (Rick) Garanflo of Austin, TX, Pamela (Brent) Bunte of Fort Dodge, IA and Carrie (Dave) Lueneburg of Hudson, WI; four grandchildren, Christina and Jay Bunte, Andrew and Christopher Lueneburg; and one niece and two nephews.
