Emily Hazelwood Obituary

Emily Hazelwood
June 8, 1954 - April 18, 2021
Columbia, South Carolina - Emily Cockman Hazelwood, 66, passed away Sunday, April 18, 2021 in Columbia, SC after a difficult, but courageous battle with cancer.
Emily was a native of Robbins, NC, and graduated from North Moore High School, then Greensboro College. She worked for Merrill Lynch, and most recently the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. Emily had a gift for making others look good; just one of her many talents. She was practically a gourmet cook, and her family enjoyed asking her to taste a specific food and name the spice used to create the flavor. She brought a natural grace and beauty to everything around her, as evidenced by her green thumb, and has left many beautiful flowers in her path for others to enjoy.
Emily was preceded in death by her parents, William and Bernice Cockman; brother, Larry Cockman. Emily is survived by her husband of 44 years, Wayne Hazelwood; sister, Ruby Cockman Jones; niece, Stacy Jones Boxell and family; niece, Molly Jones Upchurch and family; mother-in-law, Cora C. Hazelwood; brothers-in-law; Kenneth and David Hazelwood; sister-in-law, Lisa Hazelwood Boles and family; nephew, Brandon Boles and family.
A private graveside service will be held in her hometown of Robbins, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the American Cancer Society in honor of Emily Hazelwood.
Family and friends may sign the online tribute wall at www.southcarolinacremation.com.

I was a Merrill Lynch friend of Emily. We were sympatico on so many subjects; histororical sites, Old Salem, flowers and very pretty things in general. There was a three story book store in Greensboro at one time that we would walk to on our lunch hours and you could hear us exclaiming to each other: "Oh look! Have you read this?" We discovered Victoria Magazine together at that bookstore. We faithfully poured over it every month together. We also went to the library together and chose books to read - Emily loved Mrs. Polifax and The Cat Who ... books. I recently listened to Mrs. Polifax on Audible and could not get Emily out of my mind... We would visit the Greensboro Historical museum over and over and over - we knew it by heart. We ate sandwiches on the bench under the crepe myrtle trees. We took a day off together and went to Candle Tea in Old Salem. It was such a fun day. We ate at the Salem tavern and tasted each others food. When Emily moved, we would meet in Charlotte and do something fun. That only happened twice. But time and illness on my part and distance caused us to drift. I had a brief instagram back and forth last year. But life is funny - you always think you have more time. You know that just as soon as you get this thing finished or this crisis out of the way, you will call and plan a day ... and I am so incredibly sad... SAD that this will not happen for Emily and me. Wayne, take good care. You were her brick. To all of her family, she talked about you all so much, I feel I know you. Hopefully, she is organizing trees to be removed and flower beds planted in heaven. She was so good at that. XXOO

I knew Emily through Wendy Ziegenfuss Kraft. They were roommates at Greensboro College. She was a sweet person. Wayne, I am so sorry for your loss.
