April 7, 1930 - September 8, 2023
West Columbia, South Carolina - Ernest "Ernie" Magaro, Jr. died Friday, September 8, at the age of 93. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Temples-Halloran Funeral Home, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC, 29212. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church, 120 Marydale Lane, Columbia, SC, 29210. Burial will follow at Bush River Memorial Gardens, 5400 Bush River Road Columbia, SC, 29212.
Ernie was born in Vandergrift, PA to Mary and Ernest Magaro. After serving in Korea and working in retail, he entered the homebuilding industry in 1962. He moved to Columbia in 1982 and started Rymarc Homes until his retirement in 2007. Ernie was active in the Columbia HBA and was a member of the SC Homebuilding Hall of Fame. He was instrumental in founding the HBA Scholarship Fund and other technical and GED programs in the Midlands. Ernie was an avid tennis player into his late 70's as well as a golfer into his 80's. He was a resident at Laurel Crest Retirement Community and a member of Our Lady of the Hills Catholic Church.
Ernie was preceded in death by his wife Ada, sister Patty, and son Christopher. He is survived by daughter PJ (Gary) Hilbert, son Ernie (Donna) Magaro, grandchildren Mark (Kelsey) Magaro, Megan Hilbert (fiance Jonathan Fox), Abigail Magaro, Kristen (Dr. Dustin) Biron, Jim McCarty, Samantha Ansley, Sarah Ansley, and great-grandchildren Roman and Audrey Magaro.

What a wonderl "life Well Lived" I met Ernie in Buffalo NY when he worked for Ryan Homes. My parents ended up buying a nice Colonial Home from him in Orchard Park. I went to school with his daughter evidently, as I reunited with Ernie in Columbia after I moved here in the 80's. I always enjoyed his humor, honesty and his love for family. He made sure that many family's had great homes to enjoy. He was one of the few in the business who stood by their product and would always complete their punch list to satisfaction.
God Bless Ernie and his family. They have some wonderful memories of a wonderful man.
Cheers, Ernie! Your final drive is in a lush heavenly fairway!

Mr Magaro was a terrific man. I met him through his daughter PJ, and he taught me many things. One was to discuss politics in a civil manner, another was how to play Ping Pong and win occasionally! He taught me to expect more for myself than I thought I deserved. What a kind man he was. His love for his children was bountiful. Now he joins Christopher in a glorious Heaven waiting to receive him. May he rest in peace.
