Ethelyn grew up in Saluda where she attended Saluda schools and graduated from Saluda High School. In 1950 she was crowned Miss Saluda. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Lutheran Church in Saluda, and after moving to the Gilbert area, she joined Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Johnston.
She was a loving and caring wife and mother who was very much devoted to her family. Ethelyn was the widow of Russell Everett Moyer. They were high school sweethearts and had been married for over 57 years. She is survived by her children: Vicky (Curtis) Hensley of Greenwood, Rhett (Sandy) Moyer and Mike (Dana) Moyer of Gilbert, and Hal (Dianne) Moyer of Saluda. Surviving sisters are Doris Jones Baldwin of Cayce and Sherry Jones Ash of Atlanta, GA; sister-in-law, Allison Pope Jones of Chicago, IL; daughter-in-law, Tricia Moyer of Leesville; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a doting grandmother and her grandchildren loved to visit her. Her grandchildren are Curt (Tonya) Hensley, Jr. of Ft. Sill, OK, Bill Hensley, Laura, Drew, and Logan Moyer of Gilbert; great-grandchildren, Guillermo, Alba, and Sergio Hensley of Spain, Tripp and Dillon Hensley of Hodges and Idella Ethelyn Hensley of Ninety-Six. She was preceded in death by grandson, Mason Hensley.
She graduated from Lander College with a BS degree in elementary and middle school education. She did graduate work at the University of South Carolina. She taught at Moultrie Middle School in Charleston, Riverside Middle School in Saluda, and retired from A.L. Corbett Middle School in Wagener. At A.L. Corbett, she coached the academic team for six years, and each year she organized a field trip to Charleston. Professional organizations she belonged to were the Aiken Education Association, The South Carolina Education Association, and the International Reading Association.
Ethelyn enjoyed being a member of the Greater Columbia Lioness and Lions Club. Twice she served as president of the Lioness Club. In 2005 she was named Lioness of the Year. She had been a member of Greenwood’s Assets In Motion Investment Club.
She and Everett enjoyed traveling the United States with their dear friends Talton and Emma Rineheart.
The celebration of Ethelyn’s life will be Monday, February 18, at 3:00 p.m. at Ramey Funeral Home’s Chapel with the Reverend Chris Fischer officiating. Burial will be in Travis Park Cemetery in Saluda. Visitation will be one hour before the funeral service. Pallbearers will be: Bill Hensley, Drew Moyer, Kelly Baldwin, Bill Fulmer, Timmy Temples, and Roger Benton. The family is at the home of Hal Moyer.
