Dr. Franklin Bannon Hines Jr. COLUMBIA - Dr. Franklin Bannon Hines, Jr., 89, passed away Thursday, August 17, 2017. Born December 7, 1927, in Hartsville, South Carolina, to Dr. Frank Hines, Sr. and Leo Hicks Hines, he graduated from Hartsville High School and then the University of South Carolina with a B.S. degree in biology. While at USC, Dr. Hines was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Dr. Hines attended Emory University where he earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). He then practiced dentistry with his father in Hartsville before serving in the United States Navy for two years as a general dentist during the Korean War. In Hartsville, he met and married Josephine Wickliffe, a marriage of 65 years. After serving in the Navy, he earned an M.S. degree in orthodontics from the University of North Carolina where he also completed his residency. From 1956 to 1995, he practiced orthodontics in Columbia, Lexington, Winnsboro, and Batesburg-Leesville. In 1977, Dr. Hines became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. Dr. Hines was extremely active in the dental community in South Carolina. He served as president of the Richland County Dental Association, president of the South Carolina Orthodontic Association and served on the State Board of Dental Examiners. Furthermore, he served the South Carolina Dental Association as its president as well as a member of the Legislative Committee, where he was chairman from 1969-1985. Dr. Hines was chairman of the SCDA Dental Health and Public Information Committee and served as a member and chairperson of the Constitution and By-Laws Committee for many years. He also represented the SCDA twice as a delegate to the American Dental Association's House of Delegates. Dr. Hines served as the directing secretary of the South Carolina Association's Annual Session as well as served twice on the committee to revise the South Carolina Dental Practice Act. Within the orthodontic organizations, Dr. Hines dutifully served in many capacities included being president of the South Carolina Orthodontic Association as well as a trustee, director and president for the Southern Orthodontic Association. Dr. Hines was a dedicated member of the faculty at the Medical College of Georgia's Department of Orthodontics for over 20 years, ultimately serving as the course director of the post-graduate clinic as well as interim chairman of the entire Department of Orthodontics. Because of his outstanding service to dentistry, Dr. Hines was inducted as a Fellow into the American College of Dentists (ACD). In the ACD, he served as the secretary-treasurer, vice chairman, and chairman of the Carolinas District that represented both North and South Carolina. The South Carolina Dental Association honored Dr. Hines with the George Hoffman Award, the most prestigious award it gives. He was selected as the Dentist of the Year for the greater Columbia area by the Columbia Dental Assistants' Association, as well as the Boss of the Year by the Business Women's Association of Columbia. In 2012, the South Carolina Dental Association awarded him a Presidential Citation for his prolific activates for the SCDA throughout his career. Dr. Hines continued his service in the community by working as a consultant to the Richland Memorial Hospital, the Crippled Children's Society and the Central South Carolina Council of the Boy Scouts of America where he served on the Board of Governors and President. Because of his leadership with the Boy Scouts, he was awarded their highest honor, the Silver Beaver. Additionally, Dr. Hines was very active with the United Way and the Rotary Club. At the Medical University of South Carolina, he served on the Board of Visitors on two occasions. At Midlands Technical College, Dr. Hines was a member as well as chairman of the Dental Hygiene Advisory Board. Dr. Hines was a charter member of Kathwood Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Deacons for many years at times as the chairman. One of Dr. Hines' hobbies included hunting, horses and field trials. He was preceded in death by his many beloved bird dogs and pets. Dr. Hines was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Katherine Hines Cave and Juliette Hines White; and his niece, Betsy Cave Sweatman. He is survived by his wife; his children, Frank Hines III (Sondra), Billie Hines Muthig (Paul), Dan Hines (Margaret) and Lee Hines Muthig; his grandchildren, Dawn Hines Helps (Dave), Robin Muthig, Jeff Muthig (Kathleen), Dan Hines, Jr. (Vicki), John Hines (Haley), Phillip Hines (Amy), Erin Muthig Bridges (Brandon), Chris Muthig (Anna), and Travis Muthig (Carrie Andrews). His great-grandchildren include David Lee, Ethan Bannon, and Faith Helps, Jackson Bridges, Aubrianna and Taylor Hines, and Thomas Wickliffe (Wick) and Jeffrey Paul (JP) Muthig. Dr. Hines' nieces and nephews include Julie Cave Elliott, Harriett Cave Berry, Sue White Snowden and Glenn White. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Midlands Technical College Foundation for a scholarship honoring his dedication to the dental profession.
