Harriet Swink Obituary

Harriet McCall Swink EFFINGHAM - Harriet McCall Swink, of Effingham, S.C., died peacefully in the evening of September 6, 2016, at the age of 102. She was the only child of Henry Buck and Elizabeth Ervin McCall, the widow of James Woodrow Swink and the last survivor of 48 Ervin and Dargan first cousins. She lived most of her years in the house where she was born on July 14, 1914. Her later years were lived in The Presbyterian Communities in Florence. Harriet attended Winthrop College then worked as a lab technician in Orangeburg, SC and Florence, SC. It was during these years she met and married Woody Swink of Woodruff, SC. After living briefly in Charlotte, NC they moved back to her home in Effingham. There they raised their five children with patience, understanding and love. Harriet had many interests. She loved McCall Farms, her yard and wild flowers, which she gathered and cultivated, often writing little poems to nature. She enjoyed the game of bridge which she played into her nineties. Harriet sewed and knitted, cooked, canned, entertained, traveled and supported her church, Effingham Presbyterian, in many ways. Here she was a member of Bess McCall Sunday School class and Circle One. Summers spent with her family in Montreat, NC, and Pawleys Island were important to her all her life. There are many ways Harriet Swink will be remembered and by many people, but she has left behind everlasting memories as a revered, much beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother ... Baba. Surviving are her five children, Elizabeth Swink Ellett, Henry McCall Swink (Nevitte), Marion Gray Swink (Frances), James Woodrow Swink (Julie), and Harriet Swink Pharr (David), 14 grandchildren and 14 great -grandchildren. The family wishes to express gratitude to the three who cared so faithfully for Harriet: her long time friend Wonella Fulmore, Linda Jones, and Terri Goodwin. Visitation will be Thursday, September 8, 2016, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at her home in Effingham. The funeral service will be held Friday, September 9, at 2:00 in the Effingham Presbyterian Church followed by burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. Please consider Effingham Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 25, Effingham, SC 29541, or Montreat Conference Center, P.O. Box 969, Montreat, NC 28757, if you wish to make a memorial contribution.
