Hattie Joyner Obituary

Hattie Jewell Branham Joyner BLYTHEWOOD - Hattie Jewell Branham Joyner, 93, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, completed her mission here on December 13, 2018. She was born August 28, 1925 in Blythewood, SC to Doctor Linder and Eridell Kelly Branham. She was the 7th of 11 children. Jewell married Oliver Harold Joyner on May 21, 1948 and they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on May 26, 1948. Jewell had a long successful career working for the South Carolina Department of Mental Health at various facilities including the State Hospital, Friendship Center and Morris Village. She retired from Morris Village as an administrative assistant after 40 years of service with the Department of Mental Health. A lifelong and faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jewell served both the youth and women of the church as Stake Young Women's President and Ward Relief Society President as well as other teaching positions. She was the first in the southeast area to be certified in the Camp Crafter program for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Because of Jewell's fun, gentle, kind and positive personality, many individuals enjoyed her influence. She served a mission for her church in the Atlanta Temple. And, she enjoyed many years of traveling here in the United States as well as other countries. During the last twenty-four years of her life she graciously dealt with Parkinson's disease. She never complained about how it impacted her quality of life. Her daughter, Maureen, took exceptional care of her throughout those years, which contributed, to her living a long life. She and Harold had three children (a son and twin daughters), 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her eternal companion, Oliver Harold; her son, Dale Stephen; her parents; siblings, Clinton, Annie Mae Moore, Claten, Clyde, Willard, JL, Lola and Jeanette. She is survived by Maureen Mayo (Earl) of Blythewood, Marlene Joyner of Provo, Utah, and daughter-in-law, Laneta Joyner of Blythewood; siblings, Mildred Hawkins (Thomas) of Prosperity and Ellen Cooper of Columbia. A graveside service will be held 2 o'clock Monday, December 17th at Crescent Hill Memorial Park, 2603 Two Notch Road, Columbia with Bishop Steve Lenker officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday, December 16th from 4 until 6 o'clock at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext, Columbia. The daughters wish to express their gratitude to Marilyn, Lynn, and Bonnet for the wonderful care they gave Jewell during the last few years of her life. As well as the nurses, social worker, aide and chaplain at Palmetto Health Hospice. They also express their sincere gratitude for Doris Reynolds who arranged for the Blythewood Relief Society sisters to sit and care for her on Sundays. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to either Parkinson Association of the Carolinas, 2101 Sardis Road North-Box 15, Charlotte, NC 28227 or the missionary fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
