James Casteel Obituary

James Franklin Casteel, age 72, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2025. Jim was born October 1, 1952, in Palestine, Texas, and, at the age of seven, moved with his family to Greenville, South Carolina. He graduated from Furman University and went on to earn two master's degrees and a Ph.D. in Educational Testing, Development, Research, and Design from the University of South Carolina. Jim dedicated his career to the South Carolina Department of Education, where he worked with passion and commitment until his retirement in 2008.

In 1981, Jim met the love of his life, Bill Hopkins, in Columbia, SC. Following retirement, Jim and his husband, Bill, made their home in Rancho Mirage, California. Together, they shared a deep love of travel, exploring much of Europe and making many cherished trips to Hawaii, where they had spent their honeymoon. Jim especially treasured attending the Running of the Bulls in Spain and cooking classes in Italy.

Jim is survived by his sister, Sally Casteel Craven (David), and four nephews, James Craven, Cas Craven, Curtis Taylor (Hope), and Jay Taylor (Megan). He was preceded in death by his husband, Bill Hopkins; his parents, Margaret and Jim Casteel; and his sister, Lacey Ellis.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in Greenville, South Carolina.

Those who knew Jim will remember his intelligence, kindness, integrity, and deep love for family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of caring and a life well lived. He will be greatly missed.

Yesterday

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Jim from time to time. As a school district educator, Jim was always generous with his time and answered my questions with great patience and clarity. He was so knowledgeable and always, always the ultimate professional.
