James Patterson Obituary

DARLINGTON — James Manville Patterson, II of Darlington died on September 12, 2009. He was the son of the late Joseph C. Patterson and Ellarene Woodward Patterson. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Darlington. Interment will follow in Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home.
 
Mr. Patterson was born on June 10, 1926 in Florence. He graduated from St. John’s High School in 1947 after serving in the Navy during the Second World War. He received his initial training at Camp Perry, VA, and later graduated from Hospital Corps School at Bainbridge, MD. After a tour of duty at Paris Island, SC, he received Marine Corpsman Training at St. Bruno, CA, for service in the Pacific area. He served on the Hospital Ship USS Samaritan AA 10 and had occupation duty in Japan. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1952 with a BS in Science. He taught school in Iowa for several years before returning to Darlington. He worked for Darlington Veneer Company and Darlington County School District, retiring in 1996.
 
He was a member of First Baptist Church, served as Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. A Legion of Honor Member of the Darlington Kiwanis Club and Board of Directors of the Pee Dee Chapter of the American Red Cross.
 
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Maxine Voss Patterson; children, Cynthia (Earl) Pierce, James M. Patterson, III (Melanie), Beckie (Jeb) Potterfield, Lorie (Kynn) Harris; 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret (Marjo) J. Wilson of Florence. He was predeceased by brother Joseph C. Patterson.
 
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Belk Funeral Home on Broad Street in Darlington. Memorials may be made to Free Medical Clinic, 203 Grove Street, Darlington, SC 29532.
