James Underwood Obituary
October 29, 1937 - January 8, 2022
Columbia, South Carolina - The funeral service for James Lowell Underwood, 84, of Columbia, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 22. 2022 in the Chapel of Temples Halloran Funeral Home, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212. The Underwood Family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of the service. Burial will follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens with United States Army Military Honors. The Reverend Jeff W. Childress, of Salem United Methodist Church, officiating.
Professor Underwood was born on October 29, 1937, in Rome, GA, and departed this earthly life on January 8, 2022. He was the son of the late James S. Underwood and Mildred Chandler Underwood. Jim received his undergraduate and law degrees from Emory University where he was editor-in-chief of the law review. Following law school, he served three years as a captain in the Judge Advocate General's Corps of the US Army and then earned his LLM from Yale.
In 1966, Jim joined the University of South Carolina School of Law Faculty and taught there until his retirement in 2003. His title is "Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Law". Jim was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.
Surviving: his loving wife of 52 years, Joan Campbell Underwood of the home, daughter, Mary-Ann Belcher; grandsons, Joshua David, and Steven W. Belcher. He was preceded in death by his late parents.

I am so sorry for your loss. He was one of my favorite Law Professors at USC Law, and absolutely unforgettable. May God bless him and you and ease your pain of loss.

Jim was a good friend and colleague at the law school. His important scholarship was an inspiration to all his colleagues. His good cheer, sense of humor, and friendliness will all be missed. His life was a good one, and we know that he will rest in peace.

I was in the 1973 graduating class. He was perhaps the most popular faculty member at the law school. He also taught the premier course, Con Law. A perfect match of a golden professor teaching this subject during the Supreme Court´s golden era, before the recent college departed contentious children of the 60´s. All men save for 6 in a class of 360. In the south. Tricky. A modern and progressive court in a part of the country dearly clinging to a revered allegiance to the past. With evenhandedness, humor and deep intelligence, he navigated these waters, even though young, and rumpled always rumpled , like a seasoned mariner. Stands out even now, almost 50 years gone. He was special.
