Jay Markowitz Obituary

Jay Michael Markowitz COLUMBIA - Jay Michael Markowitz, MD, passed away on June 7, 2016 from complications of cancer after serving the Columbia region for over four decades as a trusted internist and educator. A native of Philadelphia, and a graduate of Temple Medical School, Dr. Markowitz came to Columbia during two years of military service at Fort Jackson and made Columbia his home for the rest of his life. Dr. Jay was one of the first physicians to ever work for Lexington Medical Center and spent much of his career working with the esteemed Internal Medicine Associates of West Columbia before starting his own practice, Jay Markowitz and Associates. He also served as an instructor for the University of South Carolina School of Medicine's students during their clinical rotations for many years, helping to educate and shape the experiences of numerous medical students over the years. His service to the community and dedication to improving the lives of his patients brought him the Order of the Palmetto from the Governor of South Carolina in 2003. Most recently, Dr. Jay was a faculty member and medical director for Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group's only internal medicine practice in West Columbia. His impact as a mentor and clinician has been further demonstrated by his sons' decisions to follow his career path into medicine. Dr. Jay is survived by his wife Deborah, brother Gerald, sister Marsha, his son Jonathan and daughter-in-law Kathryn, son Brad and daughter-in-law Bethany, and his 6 grandchildren. He was loved by his family and will be deeply missed. A memorial service in Dr. Jay's honor will be held at his medical office at 103 Saluda Ridge Court in West Columbia on Saturday, June 10 from 2 to 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dr. Markowitz' name to the American Cancer Society. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, assisted the family. In recent years, I have been a patient of his son, Dr. Brad. This was and is truly a caring and competent family physician practice. He redefined my expectations for what it meant to be a doctor. He was always appreciative of our hard work and supported our individual goals. To the entire Marowitz family, I give my sincere appreciation for this great doctor whom I will never forget! Jay and I had a special relationship for 15 years while I was in Lexington, SC. The times we shared together and almost daily phone calls along with the thousands of patients we shared together were always wonderful. I did not know Jay at all until I walked in his office one day and told him I was starting my practice and we instantly had something in common. We were 2 boys from Philadelphia who moved south to practice medicine and absolutely loved it in Lexington, SC. I missed him greatly after moving to Pittsburgh, PA. The memories I have will always be eternal and never forgotten! One day we will laugh together again Jay!

My very best!, Dr. Bob Amory

I am fortunate to have been his patient for many years and credit him for saving my life with his diagnostic acumen. He was always willing to take time to share information in depth and I treasured his ability to do so in a way which made it comprehensible to a lay person. I am saddened that his career and life was ended in this manner but I'm sure he was happy to be able to do what he loved until close to the end. My deepest sympathy to his family, coworkers and employees. He has left a legacy which will be hard to duplicate.

Dr. Jay, this is Dr. Pammy. Thank you so much for teaching me how to cook Monza Ball Soup. I must say your broth was the best, so clear. Your mom would be so proud. Gary and I enjoyed your wit and big smile on our visits. Jay helped so many even at home with the late night phone calls he would work until he found a reason why they were sick or he would see that his patients were put in good hands. Jay was of the old style of Doctoring not looking at a computer but at the patient. What a lost art for our world. Thank you also for the love you showed my sister Deborah your wife, and the time you spent with Renee and Josh. Gary said he will miss his buddy. Brad and John and to your families, may God bless you with peace at this time. See you in Heaven my friend we can cook there together and laugh. God bless you. With much love Gary and Dr. Pammy

I am so saddened to learn of the death of our beloved Dr. Markowitz. My grandmother was one of his first patients when he began practicing in Columbia. He went on to treat my parents, Gene and Eloise Willard, my sister, Sherry and my husband and me. We all loved, respected and admired his dry wit, intellect, very capable care, and dedication to the medical profession. He will be sorely missed by the patients and community he has served over these many years, especially by this family. We will be keeping all of you in our thoughts and prayers in the days ahead. Much love to all.

Dr. Jay was our doctor for over 30 years. We trusted his judgement and he always had our best interest at heart. If he couldn't fix it, he would always recommend someone who could. We will greatly miss him. Roy's mother, Louise Smith, has been his patient for over 40 years and will be 99 this year. He was always so proud of her health, especially at her age. Our prayers go out to his family and everyone who worked for him.
