Joan Dillard Obituary

Joan Pittman Dillard
August 8, 1941 - September 3, 2021
Camden, South Carolina - A memorial service to celebrate the life of Joan Pittman Dillard, 80, of Camden, will be held at Grace Episcopal Church on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at 11:00 AM. The Rev. Pickett Wall will officiate. Committal will follow the service in the church memorial garden. Memorials may be made to Autism Speaks, Juvenile Diabetes, Thiel-Meyer Pet Adoption Center, or Grace Episcopal Church.
Joan passed away peacefully at home on September 3, 2021, surrounded by her children. Joan was born August 8, 1941 in Port Arthur, Texas, to the late George T. Pittman and Louise Beck Pittman.
Joan grew up in Greenwood, Delaware, where she attended Greenwood schools. She attended Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, Delaware, and then worked for DuPont in Seaford, Delaware.
She moved to Camden in 1966, where she raised her family, which included a variety of pets. Joan was an attentive, loving mother to her three daughters and Nana to her grandchildren. Joan truly loved and cared for many animals, a trait passed on to her children and grandchildren,. Joan occasionally was accused by her daughters of being nicer to their pets than to them (but only during the girls' teenage years). Her quick wit and calm demeanor were instrumental characteristics for raising three daughters. Each of her eight grandchildren were special to her in their own way.
She loved gardening, cooking, playing bridge, and being with family and friends. She was a faithful and trusted friend. Joan never missed Tuesday night with her beloved "Pizza Group", and cherished her bridge and card groups. Joan was a member of Grace Episcopal Church for many years, where she served on the Altar Guild and volunteered in many other capacities.
Joan is survived by her daughters, Laura Dillard Paasch (Tim) of Glen Allen, Virginia, Lisa Dillard Meares and Margaret Dillard Edmunds of Columbia, South Carolina; grandchildren, Erin Elizabeth Paasch, Kathryn Dillard Paasch, William Mason Paasch, Thomas Bryant Edmunds, III, Margaret Briggs Edmunds, Anne Ashe Edmunds, Walter Lee Meares, Jr., and Sallie Meriwether Meares; her brother, George T. Pittman, Jr. (Diane) of Lewes, Delaware; and nieces, Susan Pittman of Lewes, Delaware, and Beth Whitney (Terry) of Chicago, Illinois.
She was predeceased by the father of her children, Alfred Magruder "Mac" Dillard, Jr.
Joan's daughters are especially grateful for her many friends who helped during her illness, MSA Hospice, and Dr. Will Merritt, Shelly Goins, Kathy Chavis, and Mary Leitch of SCOA.
Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
