Leesville, South Carolina - Joan Oleitha Hedghes was born January 4, 1943 in Boulder, Colorado and died February 10, 2022 at home in Leesville, South Carolina. Joan was the daughter of Joseph and Rena Beth Lederer and granddaughter of Samuel R. Wheeler, Pastor and founder of the Seventh Day Baptist Church.
Joan grew up in Boulder, Colorado. Truly, divine providence brought the best man into her life. It was love at first sight and she was married on October 28, 1960 to Donald G. Hedghes. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. She raised three girls, Jenice, Denice and Lenice. Jenice died July 15, 1975. Denice married Randal D. Rader, having 5 children and 13 grandchildren. Lenice married Charles R. Shoemaker, having three children and three grandchildren.
Joan loved the beauty of this world - roses, violets, humming and wild birds. She loved to sew, garden, paint and entertain. Making the Sabbath Challah was a blessing she wanted to share each week. Sharing love over a cup of tea with family and friends were treasured moments in her life. She loved to go the 'extra mile' adding glimmer to her style. She was known for her flashy eyelashes and her bling! Her glitter did not hinder her firm faith in Jesus (Yeshua, the Messiah). Her convictions allowed her to easily share the good news offered to all that would receive her.
In remembrance of her, the family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Friday, February 18, 2022, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
