John Hinks Obituary

John Whitley Hinks, Sr.
May 25, 2023
Columbia , South Carolina - John Whitley Hinks Sr., lovingly known as "Big Red" to his friends and family, passed away on May 25, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories. He was born and raised in Sumter, South Carolina, on June 17, 1943, to his late parents, John Harry Hinks and Mildred Hartness Hinks.
After graduating from Wofford College, John embarked on a successful career as an entrepreneur, establishing the Hinks Mortgage Company in 1983. For three decades, he dedicated himself to serving numerous families in Columbia, providing them with the opportunity to realize their dreams of homeownership.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He shared a profound bond with his beloved wife, Linda Bridges Hinks, and together they built a life filled with love, support, and cherished memories. John was a proud father to his sons, John Whitley Hinks Jr. and Whitley Bridges Hinks, who brought immense joy and pride to his life. He adored his daughters-in-law, Britt Hinks and Aimee Hinks, who lovingly became part of his family.
The presence of John's five grandchildren, Jack, Lucy, Grayson, Brooks, and Eleanor, brought him immeasurable happiness and fulfillment. He cherished every moment spent with them, creating lasting memories that will forever be treasured by his family.
John was an avid golfer, and his vibrant personality and warm spirit endeared him to all who knew him. He possessed a larger-than-life presence and a zest for life that lit up any room he entered. Known for his jovial nature, he embraced life's celebrations and was always the life of the party. Among his happiest memories were his victories as the "Big Splash Champion" at Wildewood Country Club and his involvement as one of Santa's merry helpers.
John's commitment to his community was evident in his involvement with various organizations. He co-founded Carolina Sunshine for children, a testament to his dedication to improving the lives of children. As a charter member of Wildewood Country Club and a proud member of the Columbia Rotary, he actively contributed to the betterment of his community.
John will be laid to rest at Evergreen Memorial Park in Sumter, South Carolina, a place that holds a special significance to him and his family. His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, and he will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Linda, his sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and a host of lifelong friends and neighbors in Sumter and Columbia.
As we mourn the loss of John Whitley Hinks Sr., let us also celebrate his life and the impact he had on all those fortunate enough to have known him. May his soul find eternal peace, and may his memory continue to bring warmth and joy to our hearts.
The life of John Whitley Hinks Sr. will be celebrated on June 17, 2023 (at 4:00pm) at Wildewood Country Club on what would have been his 80th birthday. All those whose lives were touched by John are invited to join the family in commemorating his life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Carolina Sunshine or Camp Cole in honor of John's passionate commitment to making a difference in the lives of children.
Rest in peace, dear John, knowing that your legacy of love and laughter will live on in the hearts of all those who were fortunate to have known you.

Dear Hinks Family,
I was shocked and saddened to hear of John´s death. I first met John at Wildewood in the late seventies and enjoyed golfing with him. After leaving WW I would see John on our yearly fishing trip s to Florida. He WAS the life of the party and was loved by all who knew him. He will be sorely missed. I have been blessed to have known him and to have been counted in his multitude of friends. May he Rest In Peace and May God Bless you and all his family.
