John Thomas Obituary

John H. Thomas, Jr.
June 8, 1939 - June 26, 2023
West Palm Beach, Florida - John H. Thomas Jr., 84, passed away Monday, June 26, at his home in West Palm Beach, Florida. Born in South Carolina, raised in the town of Estill, he graduated Estill High School, then The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. He joined the army, serving in Korea and Germany, where he received an honorable discharge and continued to live for several years. Coming back to Estill he took the position of headmaster at Patrick Henry Academy where he, in addition to being remembered fondly by former students decades later, was instrumental in the school's expansion, having a building named after him in 1970. He continued his education at Parsons School of Design in New York, earning a degree in Architectural and Interior Design. He worked for a design firm in New York for several years before accepting a position in Florida. His refined and extraordinary taste and design ability brought many loyal customers, and eventually he opened his own successful design firm, at which he worked until he retired. In his leisure years he enjoyed travel, keeping contact with family and friends in Florida and South Carolina, and his favorite pastime, reading. He will be dearly missed by family and friends. He will be interred in the family plot in historic Lawtonville Cemetary, Estill. Details for a service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to Patrick Henry Academy, 8766 Savannah Highway, Estill, S.C. 29918
