Lecta Byrd Obituary

Lecta Morgan Byrd

November 3, 1928 - May 3, 2025

Columbia, South Carolina - Lecta "Lucky " Morgan Byrd was born November 3, 1928 in Kipling, NC and went home peacefully to her Savior on May 3, 2025. She was the last baby of 13 children in her family. This gave her a lasting appreciation of family and the desire to fellowship together on a regular basis. Being raised on a farm instilled a strong work ethic, an appreciation of good food, the joy of caring for others and enjoyment of all God's creation.

Lecta married the love of her life, James Morris Byrd on July 7, 1948. She supported his career and while he was in the Air Force they moved to Reno, NV where she dealt blackjack and acquired the nickname "Lucky", that stuck with her for life. As Jim's career changed, they moved around North Carolina and eventually settled in Columbia, SC in 1976.

Lecta was a loving and dedicated mother for her three sons. She loved to fish and would take every opportunity she could to drop a line in the water with her husband. She enjoyed backing pies and muffins. She spent Tuesday afternoons passing on her baking skills to her granddaughter and then served dinner for the family each week for decades. As the family grew up, she frequently attended her great grandsons' sporting events and piano recitals. In the evenings, she could be found sitting outside in continuous awe of God's creation as she enjoyed her glass of wine. She always had a thankful heart and a giving spirit and enjoyed life.

Lecta was predeceased by her parents and siblings, her beloved husband, James Morris Byrd, Sr. and her youngest son, David Wesley Byrd. She is survived by her sons James Morris Byrd, Jr. (Tammi) of Charleston, SC and John Monds Byrd (Loretta) of Gainesville, GA, daughter-n-law Sandra Byrd, granddaughters, Anna Brent (David) of Irmo, SC and Blakely Radford (Bryson) of Sumter, SC and great grandsons Lawson and Callen Brent.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 9, 2025 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends and family before the service at 1 p.m. in the church's Gathering Place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church missions fund at 6952 St. Andrews Rd., Columbia, SC 29212 or Epworth Children's home.

Jim, I have such a vivid memory of your mom and dad! It was at the 50th birthday party on the boat for Tammi. They were always so much fun to be around and share stories. She will surely be missed. I can just see Lecta and your dad back together having a cocktail and enjoying their reunion. Sending love to you and Tammi and your beautiful family!

Mrs. Byrd was a delight! Always full of fun, pleasant, and I am rejoicing that she is again with sweet Mr. Byrd. My prayers are for her family's peace and comfort who cared for her with deep devotion.
