Columbia, South Carolina - Margaret Barnwell Harvin, a lifelong resident of Columbia, SC, died on January 21, 2021 while residing as a member of the Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community.
Margaret was the daughter of Margaret Holtzworth Bauer and Capt. (Ret) Joseph Woodward Barnwell, Jr., designer of the Gervais Street Bridge in Columbia. Mrs. Harvin was a graduate of Dreher High School and Hollins College; she taught in the Physics departments of Sweet Briar and Hollins Colleges in Virginia; she was a society writer for the State Newspaper; and she worked for the IRS and H&R Block. She was a volunteer tax preparer for seniors at the Shepard's Center of Columbia and a Docent at the Columbia Museum of Art.
Margaret was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and Forest Lake Country Club. She was a member of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of South Carolina. The Junior League of Columbia and several garden, book, and bridge clubs. Margaret enjoyed farming timber and soybeans, swimming, painting, reading (she read War and Peace three times) and spending time with her family at the Harvin House on Kiawah Island.
Mrs. Harvin is survived by three sons, John, Jr. and his wife Susan of Fredericksburg, VA, Joseph and his wife Sandra of Picayune, MS, and Scott Harvin and his fiancé Katherine of Walterboro, SC; son-in-law, Christopher Fehn of Columbia; four grandchildren, Christopher, Andrew S., Luke and Andrew M.; also surviving are her three great grandchildren, Corinne and Caralyn Harvin (Andrew S.) and Wilkins Harvin ( Christopher) and multiple nieces and nephews.
Margaret was predeceased by her parents, her husband, John R. Harvin, MD, her daughters, Margaret Barnwell Harvin and Katherine Kinloch Harvin Fehn, her brother, Joseph Barnwell and two sisters, Harriott Kinloch Barnwell Howell, and Isabella Middleton Barnwell.
A private family service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral with interment following in her family plot at Elmwood Cemetery, in Columbia, SC.
