Martha Frick Haigler
May 4, 1935 - September 9, 2021
White Rock, South Carolina - Martha Frick Haigler, beloved and devoted mother and grandmother, entered peacefully into glory on September 9, 2021. She was born in Greenville, SC on May 4, 1935, the eldest daughter of Jacob Harvey and Catherine Hackney Frick.
Martha had a lifelong love of the Lutheran Church and of its musical tradition. She attended Newberry College, graduating magna cum laude in 1956. While at Newberry, she was active in the Newberry College Singers, served on the staff of the Newberrian, was listed in Who's Who, and was awarded the Cromer Citizenship Medal. She maintained close ties with her alma mater throughout her life even serving on the Board of Directors of the college's Alumni Association.
Martha was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for 51 years and sang in its church choir for much of her time there. She served several terms as the church treasurer and on church council throughout her long membership. She also supported the larger missions of the church through her association with the Women of Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, holding posts as Secretary and Treasurer at various times during her work with them. She also served on the Board of Trustees at Lutheridge in Arden, NC.
Professionally, Martha was the bookkeeper at the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary for 29 years, and she faithfully served the Region 9 archives of the ELCA as a volunteer. For this latter service, she received the H. Walton Greever award in 2017.
Martha travelled extensively after her retirement from the seminary, visiting Europe and indulging her love of sacred music by attending the once-a-decade Oberammergau Passion Play twice during her life. Her love of travel was exceeded by her love and pride of South Carolina which she demonstrated through the many organizations she supported among which were South Carolina ETV, Columbia's Riverbanks Zoo, and the South Carolina State Museum.
Martha is survived by her two daughters, Brigadier General (ret) Janice M. Haigler, Mrs. Rachel H. Cockrell (Philip), three grandsons, Samuel (Eva), Lee (Sarah), and Jacob Cockrell (fiancée Jessica Amick), two sisters, Anna Catherine Snyder and Sara Russell, multiple nieces, a nephew and many cousins.

I was very saddened to learn of Martha's passing. I enjoyed working with her in the Sarah group at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. She was such a wonderful kind person. My deepest sympathies go out to the family.
