Matthew Cannon Obituary

Matthew E. Cannon COLUMBIA - Services for Matthew E. Cannon will be held 12:00 Noon Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at First Calvary Baptist Church, located at 1401 Pine Street, Columbia. Burial to follow in Palmetto Cemetery. The family will receive friends this evening from 6-8 at Palmer Memorial Chapel with the Omega service beginning at 5:00P.M. Mr. Cannon died on Thursday, May 15, 2014. He was born in Columbia to the late Johnny and Emma Cannon. He was educated in the public schools of Richland School District One. After graduation from Booker T. Washington High School in 1947, He earned a B.S. Degree from Benedict College, a Master Degree from the University of Wisconsin; additional post graduate studies at South Carolina State University and the University of South Carolina. He earned an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Cannon was assistant principal at Crayton Middle School and a Principal at Atlas Road and Denny Terrace Elementary Schools. He was a lifelong member of First Calvary Baptist Church, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the NAACP. He was predeceased by his first wife, Doris Gilliam Cannon, and four brothers; John Edward, Theodore, David (Josephine) and Johnny Cannon, Jr. (Dorothy). He was devoted to his family, leaving as survivors, a wife, Doris Thomas Cannon; two children, Nikki and Whitney, and granddaughter, Peyton and a grandson Chase; four brothers, William, Clem, Dennis, Josephus (Peggy) two step children, James (Candace) Douglas and Rosalyn Carter, six step grandchildren and other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Calvary Baptist Church or Benedict College.

Mr. Cannon was an excellent school administrator who held the admiration of students, parents and fellow administrators. As a student, I remember him fondly. My condolences to his family. Know that your father was a great man who positively touched many lives. God Bless.

Mr. Cannon was my Principal when I came to school for Kindergarden at Atlas Road.. he always remembered me !!! He was a wonder person!

Mr. Cannon and the entire staff at Atlas Road had the best intentions for us. They wanted us to do well.

Mr. Cannon and I did not know each other personally very well--we ran across each other in the dressing room of the Drew. A friend of Mr. Cannon told me of his passing. I extend to his family and friends my condolences. I know you will miss him and so will I. Pleasantries between acquaintences, however casual, are the glue and mortar of society and part of the joy of being alive and sharing that joy with your fellow man.
