When Charles Wilkie, a local booking agent and concert promoter, thinks of classic rock, one person comes to mind: Mike Scott.
Scott, the WMFX-FM Fox 102.3 afternoon DJ, died of lung cancer Wednesday morning at age 46.
Wilkie, of All-In Entertainment, said he sought Scott’s opinion when booking performers such as Leon Russell, Warrant, Great White, Robert Earl Keen and Mother’s Finest.
“He always cared about how the shows did, and that meant a lot to me,” Wilkie said.
Scott, whose real last name was Uischner, began his career at the classic rock Fox in 1988, a year after the station started broadcasting.

Still remembering the man I relinquished my studio chair to in the afternoons. He commanded the mic from 3p-7p and had such a way with his listeners. Lighting a candle and remembering you always, Mike.

AJ, Sprout and the entire Fox 102 family,
My sympothy carrys great grief as I just heard of Mike's passing. He was a great friend and co-worker both during and after my founding tenure at Fox 102. Fondest memories include snow skiing in WVA, Lolapoluza with Benji and Mexican lunch with AJ using trade coupons. He will always be in my thoughts as a true rock and roll DJ and super production genius. If God has a radio station, Mike will be 3pm-7pm.

Don and Janet, I was so sorry to hear about Mike. He and my son, Jim, had been friends for many years. Everyone loved and admired Mike, and he will be missed more than words can express. His memory will never be forgotten. My heart goes out to his wife and children, and to you, his parents. You can be very proud he was your son, his accomplishments were many.

The road has been so long, far more miles are behind us than in front of us, so, while trying to recall the quintessential "Mike Scott" moment to pass along, I find that there are far too many...yet one beer laced conversation stands out...I remember pounding beers with Mike late, LATE at night in the 80s marvelling at how we had the best jobs in the world and how funny it was that we, as disc jockeys, got paid to sit on our behinds, play music loud and be smartasses...and we'd laugh like loons into the wee morning hours at the thought that we could do this for the rest of our lives. I just always thought that he'd be at it a bit longer. I'm dumbstruck with grief. I am thinking of you and the kids, Andrea. You, too, Beard. A father, husband, son, brother and friend is gone far too soon. Save a seat at the bar for me, Mike.

Mike gave me my big break in "professional" radio. After college, I sent tapes to just about every station in Columbia, and somehow one was passed to Mike. The next thing I knew, I was pulling overnights on the weekends....then day shifts...and then Mike and I were discussing the merits of Van Halen with Dave versus Sammy. I can't recall offhand on which side of that debate he landed, but he never gave me a hard time for refusing to play "Van Hagar".
I don't think it would have been possible to have a better mentor in radio, and I consider myself lucky to have had such a great one so early on in my career.

Mike lived life at eleven...one louder!
I'm so glad he and AJ got me to hang out at that golf driving range, drinking beer. I didn't want a job when I got there but I had one by the time I left. Weirdest interview ever. Best job ever.
One day Mike and I will grab that beer we've been promising. Save me a seat my friend. I'll be later but I'll come looking for you.
Don't rest in peace, that's not your style, Rock em! Rock em all! Give them ear plugs and do it like you do. 100% Rock and Roll at all times.
Thank you for your advice, your petite shoulders and how they held me up, your class in an iffy business and most of all, thank you for being you. My life, radio and Rock and Roll are better because of you. I'm proud of what we've done together and I'm proud to have known you. You were one of the greats.
We will toast you tomorrow. I will miss you every day.
Andrea, I miss you, Let's not lose touch again.

I don't think Mike could get through a sentence with out a chuckle about something. After many cold beers at Group and years of sampling Mikes chili at the Cook-Offs I can say he was a splendid drinking buddy, a pretty nice guy for a Yankee but not much as a chili cook. You are a friend that will be missed for a long time.

AJ,
Our prayers are with you and your family. It is rare in radio to have local dj's stick around but thoughout various ownership changes the Fox has stayed strong. Koko, Beard, Mike are the heart of the station. I'll always remember the spot Donna, me and Mike cut for CR's which all three of us sang to Over the Hills and Through the Woods to Grandmothers House. We all thought it was great but Jonathon wouldn't let us air it on WNOK. It was classic.

I never met Mike but I could tell we had been down the same path that included a deep love of people and music. I was always thrilled when he would passionately announce the status of the regionals between bands during the basketball season. His enthusiasm was incredible as he often played the classics of Southern rock like Skynryd with pride. May God comfort your soul and give grace to your family.

Mike and his wife, AJ, have been great friends of mine for more than 25 years, since the "black hole" of the early 80's when there was no rock radio in Columbia. We used to sit around in my apartment in West Columbia, get hammered, and try to pick up I-95 out of Savannah on rabbit ears because it was the closest rock station at the time. We vowed that one day we would work in rock radio. Together, we survived our mutiny/experiment/statement called K-95 Rock in 1986. It was a lesson in adversity and survival which brought us all very close together, and prepared us for the careers we would enjoy for years to come. Mike's comedic timing and wit were incredible. His production was outrageous. Mike...thanks for being a big part of some of the best radio I can remember. Sorry you had to leave the party so soon.

Mike and I worked together at WSCQ before I went to help start FOX 102, and he later to start K95 (WARQ). We went from teammates to arch rivals in a period of months. We both enjoyed our new roles in "battle of the rockers." Later, Mike came to FOX after I had left to go into sales. He always treated me like I was still part of the station, even though I would chide him that the better station had won the battle. He would happily remind me that he was still there, and I was not. We have all truly lost an old friend, and we will miss him. Our prayers are with his family.

I worked at FOX 102 part-time for three years. I remember my first day – Christmas Eve, 1995. It was the first time I had ever talked on the air. Mike called the station because he could tell how nervous I was. He calmed me down and gave me advice on how to handle my first day – identify the station each time you get on the air and if you are still uncomfortable speaking, play the liners in between songs that he and Weird Beard had recorded. That’s what I did. AJ and family, I am truly sorry for your loss…

Fox Family,
My deepest sympathy for your loss. Like so many, I rode home with Mike during the Traffic Jam! We could always hear his love of the music and his zest for life. During lunch today Koko, in tears, justed played Blue Sky in eulogy. Without being morbid, this is the one song that will be played at my funeral as well - a fitting tribute to another fallen brother of the road. "good 'ol Sunday morning, bells are ringing everywhere - gone to Carolina, won't be long and I'll be there..." May the love of Christ cover your family during this time of grief and loss.

Andrea, Beard, I'm so sorry. Mike the irrepressable, Mike the eternaly young. Wow is he gonna be missed He was probably the most fun loving person I'ev ever known.Incredibley funny how situations quite normal could take on a hay-wire life of thier own as soon as Mike showed up. A favorite memory: Riding with Mike & Beard to WV on a FOX ski trip, and getting accused of breaking into the hot tub ( we were INVITED) Mike laughing taking over the DJ booth & playing "Blood Sugar Sex Magic" for the first time while I was on stage.ROcking out with the Black Crowes & turning around to discover all of our jackets had been stolen by "fans" So many years have passed.I'lll always remember my "running around town staying barley out of trouble" chum. He was too young, but boy did he leave us with loads of memories. Thanks for sharing him with the public Andrea. We'er all better off for your generousity.Peace and Love to you & the kids.

My mom died in 1997, so I hope it was like her lung cancer - quick! This is my favorite station, and have been listening since it was formatted into rock n' roll. God's speed! Boy, you've got a Hell of a band up there to announce every afternoon! May this family find peace of mind. God Bless you all. Find peace in the fact that he is no longer suffering, that is the one thing God wants us to know about these special human beings.

Words can't express the loss of this man to the music world. He was a true friend to all that knew him. I first met him when I worked at Rockafella's; he was one of the few personalities who was truly there for the music. Mike, you are in a better place now, and we are not. Keep on Rockin'

I was once a DJ at Fox 102, but left in 1988 (right before he got there) to take a radio job in Savannah. Although we never worked together, I still visit Columbia often and he and I were "radio buds". I was unemployed for awhile in 2004 and Mike was one of the people who tried to help me find a new job. My best to his friends, family and listeners. I'm in shock.
