Otis Matthews Obituary

Otis Jack Matthews COLUMBIA - Otis Jack Matthews went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 13, 2013. "Jack" was born September 26, 1927 in Evansville, Indiana. He was born again (spiritually this time) on December 29, 1961 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. As a young man in Evansville, Jack was an All-State high school basketball player in 1944 and 1945, playing on two state championship teams at Bosse High School. He also played at Purdue University and the University of Evansville where he graduated in 1950 with a BS degree in Business Administration. In 1950, Jack married his childhood sweetheart, Betty Lou Dail, also of Evansville. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage before Jack went to Heaven. During that time, God blessed them with five children: Jim, Judy, John, Julie and Jenny. They have 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren with one on the way. As a young father, Jack owned his own real estate business in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. In 1964, Jack, Betty and their children moved to Columbia, SC to study at Columbia Bible College (now known as Columbia International University) so they could prepare for missionary service in South Africa. After missionary work in South Africa, God led Jack back to Columbia Bible College where he served as Dean of Men, Men's Athletic Director and basketball and soccer coach. In 1977, Jack was led back into Real Estate where he served as Broker in Charge for 19 years with Russell & Jeffcoat's metro office in Columbia. During that time he was Director of the Columbia Board of Realtors and an instructor for the SC Real Estate Board of Realtors. He was Chairman of FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), an elder at First Presbyterian Church and a deacon at Shandon Baptist Church. He spoke at more than 250 meetings across the United States for CBMC (Christian Business Men's Committee International) and CWC (Christian Women's Club-Stonecroft.) He was a board member emeritus at Ben Lippen School. Jack loved golf and his golfing buddies, playing cards and spinners with "the group," and most of all he loved sharing with anyone who would listen, how they can have peace with God and assurance of life in Heaven. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Shandon Baptist Church on Forest Drive in Columbia with Rev. Dick Lincoln, Rev. Barry Gray and Dr. Robertson McQuilkin presiding. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ben Lippen School, 7401 Monticello Road, Columbia, SC 29203.

I worked with Jack and Otis Braswell in the Dean of Men's office at CBC. Jack was a LIGHT for the Lord in all he said and did. Up to that point I had never met a man who was so taken with Jesus Christ.

Betty and family, I pray that the Lord will minister to your hearts during this time of grief.

Mrs Matthews,
God is so very good for allowing us to know Jack, and to be touched by his testimony, inspiration and life. He was dearly loved by many, and lives were changed because of what the Lord did through Jack's life. We have been blessed through his touching of lives while at Columbia International.

Words fail me when I try to say what Jack meant to me. He was my mentor and friend from the beginning of our relationship. He always made me feel like I was so special to him...as he made everyone else he knew feel that way to. He was so full of compassion for the lost and would always call me when he was going to give his testimony, so I could pray for him. He loved the Lord, his family, and his friends. I will miss him so very much, but know I will see him again someday.
Betty, you and your family are a special family...you have lived lives that are a testimony to our Lord...well done my friend. I love you very much.

Thanks for teaching me the value of reading a chapter of Proverbs every day of the month.

Dear Betty and Family, when I arrived at CBC, Jack was a welcoming face with a word of encouragment. I needed both! As a young believer Jack was a mentor and friend who constantly lifted up the Lord Jesus and challenged me to do the same. I have many fond memories tucked away in my memory bank about this authentic Christ follower. I mourn your temporary loss, and celebrate his eternal gain.
Love and blessings,

Martha and I were so sad ( for us) to hear of Jack's passing from this earth but rejoice that he is Heaven with his Lord.

We have fond memories of Betty and Jack being in Greenville with us and having him speak to CBMC and CWC. What a tremendous witness for our Lord.

Betty, we will be praying for you and your entire family.

Love,

From Martha and Jim Nance

Betty,

I am in London and was saddened to read about Jack's passing. Please accept my deepest condolences. I always enjoyed playing golf with Jack and having a chat with both of you passing by your house when I wasn't golfing with him.

I have wonderful memories of "Coach" Matthew who was the dean of men while I was a student at CIU. He and Bob Kalgren, his assistant, ran a the dean of men office like an athletic program. Coach Matthews challenged us to get "in shape" spiritually. I am thankful for his and Bob Kalgren's influence in my life. Both were great examples of Biblical manhood. Now Jack and Bob are with the Lord after having run a good race and finishing well. For certain people one can look back and say , thank you Lord for allowing our path to cross. I am thankful for knowing and being known by Coach Matthews.

John,I don't know if you remember me but we worked together at Davison's many years ago. You were a bright light in my life during a difficult time and I remember your strong faith. Obviously, your Dad was a wonderful father who raised a Godly man. I send love and prayers to you and your family. You never know what a difference you can make in another's life. John, I think of you often and where your life has carried you.

I remember being at CIU and listening to him share with us as students. I then worked with him at Bob Russell Realty in Columbia upon my graduation and getting married. So thankful we celebrate and not mourn a death because it is truly beginning a "new life". God bless your family during this time!

The world, and mine in particular, will be a more empty place without my brother and good friend Jack. I will miss him greatly, however I will see him again in Eternity.

I arrived as a freshman at CBC in 1974 with long hair and a holey teeshirt. Coach was the first prrson i met. He said go get a hair-cut and come back. His words have stayed with me my whole life - "give it to God for a time" has been so good over my lifetime.
