Premanand S. Raut

CHESTER - Dr. Premanand Sadanand Raut of Chester, SC, passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2011 in Boston, MA after a courageous fight against cancer. Dr. Raut was born and raised in Bombay, India. His gifted hands were the source of many accomplishments, first as a musician trained in tabla, the classical Indian drum, and later as a surgeon.

After graduating from Elphinstone College and Grant Medical School in Bombay, he trained in general surgery, urology, orthopedic surgery, and vascular surgery in India, the United Kingdom, and the United States. He settled in Chester, SC, with his family and practiced general surgery at Chester County Hospital for 38 years.

Dr. Raut enjoyed a sterling reputation in Chester for four decades of providing medical care, especially to those whose needs were most, yet whose means were least. He was also a longstanding member of the Chester Rotary Club.

Dr. Raut was a dedicated physician, and loving husband and father. He will be remembered for treating all equally, with compassion and dignity.

Dr. Raut is survived by his wife of 44 years, Dr. Pratibha P. Raut of Chester, his two sons, Dr. Chandrajit P. Raut and his wife Dr. Shilpa Grover of Boston, MA, and Anant P. Raut of Washington, D.C., and many close relatives throughout India, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

To celebrate his life, a memorial service will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 25, 2011 at Purity Presbyterian Church, 135 Wylie St. Chester, SC 29055. A reception will follow the service.
