Richard Bell Obituary

Richard Murry "Coach" Bell, 88, was released from the bonds of earth to be welcomed into the arms of his heavenly Father on December 13, 2025, in Woodstock, Georgia, after a lifetime spent pouring himself into others as a husband, father, grandfather, coach, and friend.

Born September 2, 1937, in Camden, Arkansas, and raised in Little Rock, Richard was president of his class and a standout athlete at Little Rock Central High School. He went on to the University of Arkansas, where he earned degrees in physical education, captained Coach Frank Broyles' first Razorback team, and began to sense that coaching was more calling than career.

Across the next four decades he became known as one of the finest defensive minds in college football-and, even more, as a "player's coach" who cared deeply about his young men. He served on staffs at Georgia Tech, West Virginia, Texas Tech, Duke, Georgia, Air Force, and others, almost always as defensive coordinator working with linebackers and defensive backs.

At the University of South Carolina, where he was defensive coordinator and later head coach, his career was marked by righteous courage. When pressed to fire assistants he believed had not yet been given a fair chance, he refused, knowing it would likely cost him his job-an act of quiet conviction and loyalty that became legend among those who played and coached beside him.

Later, at the Air Force Academy, his 1998 defense helped the Falcons go 12–1, win the Mountain West Conference, capture the Hawaii Bowl, and finish in the national top ten; that same year he was honored as national Assistant Coach of the Year. After retiring from the college game, he wrote *Winning Defensive Football* and spent seven joyful years as defensive coordinator and middle school P.E. teacher at Prince Avenue Christian School in Athens, Georgia, where he was a mentor and spiritual grandfather to countless students.

Faith was the foundation under it all. A devoted follower of Christ, he taught Sunday school, encouraged student ministries, worshiped at Prince Avenue Baptist Church, and loved to remind his players that Faith, Fitness, Football, and Family were the true pillars of a life well-lived. He met the love of his life, Marilyn Crawford, in Little Rock, and their marriage of more than sixty years was marked by deep devotion and a home where faith and laughter were always welcome.

Coach Bell is survived by his wife, Marilyn; four children; ten grandchildren; and his brother, William Bell, and was preceded in death by his parents, Alton and Maureen Murry Bell. To know Coach Bell was to know a man of deep conviction and gentle strength-a coach who cared more about souls than stats and a servant of Jesus who finished his race with faithfulness.

Coach Bell
You never rested in your time here on earth.

And in doing so, you brought out the best in yourself and everyone around you.

You gave us all what we needed and we will keep sharing what you taught us and what we learned from you.

We all got this... we all will continue to inspire the world around us. Open up your chest and let your heart out!

For you now Richard...
It´s your time to rest, rest in eternal peace.
Love you Coach

Coach Bell was my recruiter in 1995-1996 when he was at Air Force. Hard to believe that was 30+ years ago. His "Good, Better, Best" mantra will never leave my memory. He was calm in the storm, he was confident, he was a man filled with faith, covered in grace, and in the pursuit of saving souls. I was blessed to have Coach Bell in my life and I pray earnestly to see him again in paradise.

Coach Bell was great friends with my father, Troy Green. They played together at Little Rock Central high school. I was privileged to meet him after one of their class reunions. He invited my father and I out to Colorado Springs to see them play Notre Dame in 2006. Had a great time and more importantly he became one of my good friends. When my father passed away in 2015 he and his wife Marilyn showed up at the funeral. It was a joy to see them both. He really helped me through the tough times of losing my father. I coached at Little Rock Central, defense of course,we would talk each week and he really was a mentor to me. I just a t hope that I can be the man that he was. I am going to miss our conversations. Miss you and love you Coach. R.I.P.

Coach Bell, thanks for looking out for me. I will never forget how much you cared about us. Thank you for taking me under your wing and always having the right thing to say. You made a difference for me personally as a football player and more importantly, as a man. What a beautiful gift. I hope I can do the same. You showed us the way. Go Navy!

Coach Bell left such a mark on our lives during his one year at Navy. I loved his conviction for the Lord and the tough love he had for all of us fortunate enough to play defense for him. Honored to have known him and learned from him.

In 1994, during my senior season at the Naval Academy, I had the privilege of learning from Coach Richard Bell, our Defensive Coordinator. Though I played offense as a RB/WR/KR, Coach Bell and I often spoke about how I could make our defense better simply by being better every day - by pushing them, challenging them, and sharpening iron with iron. I embraced that challenge, and it became one of the most meaningful lessons of my time on the field.

Coach Bell was more than a defensive mastermind. He was a man of God, a father, a husband, and a servant of the Most High. His wisdom, his faith, and his ability to inspire excellence left a mark on all of us. Under his guidance, our teams played exceptional defense against some of the best programs in the country. But beyond the X´s and O´s, he taught us about character, discipline, and humility.

His life story reminds us that coaching was never just a career for him - it was a calling. From his days as captain of Coach Frank Broyles´ first Razorback team at Arkansas, through decades of service at Georgia Tech, West Virginia, Texas Tech, Duke, Georgia, South Carolina, Air Force, and beyond, he became known as one of the finest defensive minds in college football. Yet he was always a "player´s coach," caring more about souls than stats, more about shaping men than winning games. His courage and conviction - like standing firm for assistants he believed in, even at personal cost - became legend among those who knew him.

Faith was the foundation under it all. He loved to remind us that Faith, Fitness, Football, and Family were the true pillars of a life well-lived. His marriage of more than sixty years to Marilyn was a testimony of devotion, and his later years teaching and mentoring at Prince Avenue Christian School showed that his greatest joy was pouring into others.

It was a blessing to know him, to learn from him, and to witness the way he lived his calling. His legacy continues in the lives of the players he coached, the students he mentored, and the family he cherished. To know Coach Bell was to know deep conviction and gentle strength - a servant of Jesus who finished his race with faithfulness.

Poem for Coach Bell
A coach, a mentor, a guiding hand,
A servant of God who helped us stand.
With wisdom deep and vision clear,
He taught us courage, year by year.

Not just in games, but in life´s fight,
He showed us strength, he showed us light.
A father, husband, faithful friend,
A legacy that will not end.

Though fields grow quiet, his voice remains,
In hearts he shaped, in lasting gains.
Coach Bell, your song of faith runs true,
We honor God by honoring you.

"That group over there... pick up your feet!" Coach Bell was football smart, tough as nails and loved Jesus. He put a lot on me as the senior LB making the huddle calls for Navy in the 1994 season. He expected me to lead and execute. But he also inspired, instructed, and cared. Great memory of him joining Fellowship of Christian Athletes sessions at the hotel every night before a game. My condolences to the Bell family. While Heaven is glad to receive him, he leaves a void down here. I look forward to talking over 4-3 front strategies from his "Wining Defensive Football" book when I meet him again.

As a young man without a father, I looked to coaches as a father figure. Coach Bell was a good, Christian man and an example I have never forgotten.

"Good, Better, Best. Work til your good's your better and your better your best."

"Mind over matter. If you don't mind, it don't matter."

Two sayings I have shared with my four boys and just about every team I have ever coached.

I am a better man for having known Coach Bell.

May his family know the comfort of our Lord and Savior as Coach awaits their reunion in Heaven.
God Bless!

Marilyn, Michelle, Meredith, Murry, and Melinda - my heart is heavy for you. Coach Bell was a very special person. I know Mom and Dad deeply admired his faith and character and were so thankful that he provided a job on his staff at Carolina in 1982. Mark and I talked about it, and we remember being at your house for many great memories many times. It was like meeting an Uncle and cousins when we got here to SC, with their playing history at Arkansas in the 50s (co-captains!). Our love, condolences, and prayers are with you. Liz Michael

Coach Bell pushed me to new levels on the football field at the Naval Academy. He was the reason that I stayed playing football at Navy after an unexpected move from quarterback to linebacker. He told me that I might get cut my sophomore year, but he gave me a chance and never gave up on me. I worked harder under his leadership and am a better person today because of Coach Bell.

Coach Bell was a players coach and we loved playing for him. He was the primary reason I chose to play ball at Air Force and he had a small but influential hand in the success of my marriage, now going strong for 25 years. A true class act who put others before himself. Thank you, Coach, you made a big impact on my life!

That was a very accurate obituary of a man who did care about his players and staff. Was at South Carolina when Coach Bell the defense and worked with him as a student manager. He treated all of us the same and enjoyed his leadership and vision. Yes he was a follower of Christ and tried to inspire us which was a chore. A true family man and father figure to a lot of players and everyone around him. Bless your family as you were an inspiration. Newton Ray (78) USC

Coach Bell led and coached us through a tough season in `94. He was full of spirit, enthusiasm, and love for the game. His energy was infectious. He was an even better man. His faith was evident throughout the highs and lows of competitive college FB. God Bless the Bell family. Thank you, Coach.

One of the most influential men in my life. And there are 100s (or more) who would say the same. As a man without a father in my early 20's ... finding someone like Coach Bell to help shape and guide me on the ball field and far beyond ... calling it a "blessing" doesn't seem like enough.
But he was a blessing for sure, in so many ways. Without question he made me a better football player. Far more important - he made me a better Believer, leader, husband, father, and friend. To have a shared history or Arkansas, and the Razorbacks made it even more special to me. We're sad when we think about, and miss deeply, this great coach and mentor we had for a little while. Even when he was tellin us "spread out and pick up your feet!" with whistle in hand. I would be far more sad to have never know such a man. Coach ... thank you.

Coach Richard Bell was a great man and through his coaching and friendship, taught many valuable life lessons about character, work ethic, focus/intensity, excellence and Christianity. And how to form tackle. These lessons, and a few funny stories, cement his great legacy in my life - and I´m sure for many more of his former players. Thanks for all you did for us, Coach. We will
miss you.
