Dr. Richard Angus Maun

COLUMBIA - Dr. Richard Angus Maun, 67, of Columbia, SC, died Thursday, December 23, 2010 at his home. He was born November 21, 1943 in Detroit, MI, the son of Dr. Mark Emmet Maun and Eleanor Wagner Maun. His family moved to Grosse Pointe, MI when he was 7.

In 1961 Dr. Maun graduated first in his class from Grosse Pointe High School and went on to major in Russian language and literature at Yale, graduating with honors in 1965. That same year he entered Columbia University's College ofPhysicians and Surgeons and upon graduating in 1969 moved to San Francisco. In the next eight years he completed his medical training and served our country as battalion surgeon for the Marine Battalion 2/4 in Okinawa and as commanding officer of the Second Collection and Clearing Platoon in the Philippines, Viet Nam, Hong Kong and Japan.

In 1977 Dr. Maun entered private practice in Whittier, CA. He was affiliated with the Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital where he served as vice chief of staff in 1982, chief of surgery in 1985, medical staff president in 1990 and chief of staff in 1990 and 1991. He taught orthopaedic surgery at the University of Southern California from 1981 to 1999 and he was a member of the Whittier Academy of Medicine from 1981 to 1999 serving as its president in 1987 and 1988. In 1999, shortly after joining an orthopaedic practice in Oneida, NY, he learned he had a long, difficult illness ahead of him; he officially retired in 2001 and moved to Columbia, SC.

Most important to him were his family and his church. His interests were reading, golf, tennis, photography, cooking, cars, playing the guitar, traveling, sports; he became very knowledgeable about art, music (all kinds), wines; he spoke five languages. He was an avid sponsor over the years of baseball, softball, basketball and soccer for the youth of Whittier. He was recognized in Whittier for 'outstanding leadership and years of service, dedication, creativity and direction' in helping local charities.

Dr. Maun is survived by his wife, Julie Kasper Maun formerly of Sherrill, NY; two sons, Mark Emmet Maun and Brendan Liam Maun, both of Los Angeles; one sister, Kathleen Swanson of Columbia; two brothers: Steve Maun of New York City and Michael Maun of Grosse Pointe. Memorials may be made to St. David's Episcopal Church, 605 Polo Rd. Columbia, SC 29223. A memorial service will be held at St. David's, Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at 11:00 a.m.
