Florence, South Carolina - Robert Weston Patterson of Florence passed away on August 5, 2021. Mr. Patterson was born on October 30, 1923 in Columbia, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Mr. Weston Patterson and Allie Jones Patterson. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Alexander Archibald Dickson of Columbia, South Carolina. Mr. Patterson was married to the late Mrs. Emily Dixon Patterson for 72 years.
With the outbreak of World War II, Mr. Patterson left his studies at Clemson College and served in the US Army Air Corp, where he flew aboard a B-24 Liberator in the Pacific Theater. He continued to serve his country for 21 years in the US Air Force Reserves, retiring with the rank of Captain.
Mr. Patterson resumed his studies after the War at the University of South Carolina in 1946, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1948 with a BS in Business Administration. The Pattersons moved to Florence in 1948 where he began a successful career spanning over 60 years as an insurance industry leader and real estate developer.
Since living in Florence, Mr. Patterson demonstrated a strong commitment to his community. He served 16 years on the Florence City Council. He was also Chair of the City-County Airport Commission, Vice President of the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Florence Housing Authority. Mr. Patterson founded the Florence Speech and Hearing Clinic and served as founding Director of the Florence United Way, Director of the South Carolina Easter Seal Society and Chair of the Florence Disabilities Foundation. He served on the board for C&S Bank, SCE&G, and Still Hopes Retirement Community in Columbia. He was active in the Florence Kiwanis Club and served as Director of the Francis Marion University Foundation. He received an Honorary Degree, Doctor of Humanities, from Francis Marion University in 2009. Light House Ministries recognized Mr. Patterson for his efforts to procure a permanent address for their ministry in June of 2018 by renaming his former insurance office at 1416 West Evans "The Patterson Building" in his honor. He also received the first Good Neighbor award given by Light House Ministry that year.
Mr. Patterson was in the insurance and real estate business for over 60 years. He was President and owner of Cormell Streett & Patterson Insurance Agency for many years. Mr. Patterson was active as State President of the Independent Insurance Agents of South Carolina, State National Director and member of the Board of Directors for Independent Insurance Agents of America, and Chair of the Southern Agents Conference. He also received the Hayne P. Glover Agent, the highest honor awarded by the Independent Insurance Agents of America.
Mr. Patterson was a loyal congregant of St. John's Church for many years, where he held numerous leadership roles, including several terms as Junior and Senior Warden. He was also a founding member of All Saints Episcopal Church.
Surviving are his daughters, Allie Patterson Walker (Richard), Emily Patterson Coward (Roger); sons, Weston Patterson (Grace), Harry Dixon Patterson; grandchildren, Elizabeth Patterson Moloney (James), Rebecca Patterson Turner (Steven), Anna Weston Patterson Tyner (Ricky), Elliott Walker Harrell (David), Allie Walker DeRoner (Jason), Richard Lawson Walker, Jr. (Elizabeth), Emily Weston Kannon, and Harry Patterson Kannon. Mr. Patterson was the proud great-grandfather to Eleanor, Edward, Vivienne, James Weston, Daniel, Sarah James, Hannah, Joseph, Dixon, Emily, and Weston.
There will be a private family service at St. John's Church with a celebration of life at a later date.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Paterson family during this time of celebrating the life of a wonderful and devoted Father, Husband, Grandfather and Great Grandfather. It was a privilege knowing your father and the many memories of your family growing up and the fun times spent at your Santee home.

Mr. Patterson served on the City-County Complex Building Commission for several years. He was the kindest southern gentlemen. I am blessed to have had him as one of my bosses. Prayers for the family.

I worked in rehab at Methodist Manor for many years and had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Patterson and Mrs. Patterson as well. They were two of the finest people I´ve ever met. Mr. Patterson was a whirlwind, always full of energy! Hold onto those precious memories. Sending hugs and prayers for all the family.

Mr. Patterson will be missed. He was man of integrity and always like to give word of advice to anyone he encounter. He loved the Addison family as his adopted family.
