Thomas Quattlebaum Obituary

Thomas Walter Quattlebaum COLUMBIA - Thomas Walter Quattlebaum, Jr., 76, passed away on Wednesday, January 16, 2019. A native of Columbia, he was the son of the late Thomas Walter Quattlebaum, Sr. and Mabel Hunt Quattlebaum. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church with burial in the church memorial gardens. Visitation will follow the service at the church. Tom was truly a people person. He took pride in telling people, "God put me on Earth to make others laugh and smile." He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a BS and MBA. He was formerly employed by the Farm Credit Banks of Columbia (AGI First) and founded Soccer Plus of Columbia. Tom was always active in helping others. He was the founding father of the Northeast Soccer Association and coached soccer for 15 years. He started the first under six-year-old program with 23 kids on the team. He was a former board member of the Columbia YMCA, Contact Help (Helpline) and Palmetto Place. Tom was Governor for the South Carolina District of Optimist International in 1971. He was a lifelong member of Optimist International and was a Spring Valley Presbyterian Church. He was also a volunteer for the South Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross. Surviving are his beloved wife and best friend, Marilyn Erwin Quattlebaum; sons, Patrick Todd Quattlebaum and wife Katie of Atlanta, GA and Thomas Jason Quattlebaum of Columbia; daughters, Kristen Leigh Quattlebaum of Atlanta, GA and Kelli Quattlebaum Hankins and husband Josh of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Ansley and Addison Hankins; sister, Annette Novovic and her husband Mile; and niece, Victoria Robinson. Tommy and I were friends at University High School and had so many wonderful times together. Last saw him at a UHS reunion in the late 1990’s and he was the same great guy.

Tom was my first boss at the Land Bank in Columbia. I moved back to Chicago, married and nownreside in California. Tom was wonderful as a boss and a person - always helpful and just so full of life. I learned about his passing on line. Fond memories and comfort to his family.

Our condolences to all of the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you through these dark hours and the days ahead.
God's blessing is in that Tommy is no longer suffering. Now it is for the living to endure the loss of such a wonderful person.
Tommy was a favorite among so many cousins. In growing up around him, he was unfailingly kind to me, to my siblings. Tommy also had such a wonderful sense of humor. He could get a laugh out of me as very few others could or can. It was one of the reasons I treasured him although we lived an ocean apart. I have such fond memories of him and will always treasure the times we shared growing up.

So sorry to hear this news, but glad he is free from pain and suffering. Praying God to hold you all in his hands at this difficult time. I will never forget when I first met Tom, he had a fun loving spirit like no one I have ever met. He made me realize to enjoy life and not be so stressed he always smiled laughed and was the most positive person. I will forever be grateful for him and him looking out for Holden and keeping an eye on him for me. He will truly be missed!
