William Powell Obituary

William Henry Powell
May 8, 1938 - January 15, 2021
Rock Hill, South Carolina - William Henry Powell
With great sorry we announce the death of our father W. Henry Powell.
Growing up in Saluda County, SC, Henry was the third child of the late Ralph B Powell & Cora B. Powell (nee Padgett). He is predeceased in death by a sister Betty Ipsaro, and brother, Wendell Powell. He is survived by sisters Daisy Porter and Anne Shuler, both of Saluda, SC.
Known as "Uncle Dub" to his many nieces and nephews, W. H. by working friends, Highpockets at the pool table, where he was an exceptional player, and simply Henry by friends at the golf course and Fort Mill, SC where he lived 30+ years with the love of his life, Ann S Powell (nee Sawyer).
Henry and Ann were married 54 years and enjoyed traveling throughout the country, taking cruises with friends, and being with their family. Ann preceded him in death in October, 2013.
Henry and Ann are survived by their twins; a son, William Keith Powell and his wife Beth residing in Statesville, NC. And a daughter, Kathy P. McMurry with husband Billy Ray McMurry living in Denver, NC. Kathy and Ray have two sons; Colby Ray & wife Sarah of Concord, NC and Corey William of Denver, NC. Also surviving is a brother-in-law, James C. (Jim) Sawyer and wife Wanda Sawyer of Tucson, AZ. Henry was simply known as Daddy to his children.
Henry was a proud veteran of the United State Army serving as a radio and communications expert. In his early career he served his community as a Fireman in Greenwood, SC. Subsequently starting a long career in construction with Daniels Construction, Duke Power, and his own successful General Contracting firm.
Henry never met a stranger, always smiling, positive, and welcoming to everyone. He loved golf, pool, and other sports throughout his life. He was a respected referee at the High School level in both football and basketball for years, and called a few ACC games before giving up his whistle.
Henry was active and proud of 50 plus years' service as a Master Mason in Greenwood, SC and his home lodge in Fort Mill, SC. Through training as an EMT, his Masonic Lodges, teaching bible school at his churches, and serving his family, Henry leaves a legacy of love and devotion to family and friends.
A memorial service will be held January 15th, 1pm, at Crossroads United Methodist Church, 1269 McCormick Highway, Saluda, SC formally Gassaway Methodist Church. His childhood church where he rests in peace with his wife and family members before him. A meal celebrating his life will follow the service in the fellowship hall.
Please make any memorials to the Gassaway Cemetery Fund or his church, Woodvale Baptist, 1538 Springsteen Rd., Rock Hill, SC 29730.
He was our guiding hand and superhero. His memory will be in our hearts always.
