West Columbia, South Carolina - William L. Whitener, age 84, of West Columbia, South Carolina, passed away on May 7, 2021. His funeral service will be held at Saluda River Baptist Church on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior from 12:00 (noon) to 1:00 p.m. at the church. Burial with military honors will be held following the service at Woodridge Memorial Park.
William was born December 13, 1936 in Gastonia, North Carolina, son of the late T.L. Whitener and Margaret Vickers Whitener. He was retired from the United States Air Force and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina. He was a life member of Sinclair Lodge 154, Columbia York Rite, Jamil Temple and the American Legion. He was a member of Saluda River Baptist Church.
He was predeceased by the wife of his two children, Joyce Wilson Whitener, and daughter, Meg Lee. Surviving are his wife, Mary West Whitener; daughter, Stephanie (Brian) Watson; step-children, Teena Glass, Jim Glass; sister, Janet Dula; six grandchildren, Daniel (Brooke) Lee, Brandon (Summer) Lee, Michael (Liz) Watson, Bailey (Justin) Crafton, Brigham (Cameron) Watson, Bryton Watson; four step-grandchildren, James Bass, Anna Bass, Jeremiah Bass and Bray Glass; thirteen great grandchildren and five step great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saluda River Baptist Church Family Life Center.
