Richard Thurmond Obituary

Richard Carl Thurmond of Acton, formerly of Attleboro and the Great State of Texas, died on March 6, 2023, in Acton. He was 68.

Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, he was educated at the University of Texas and employed for years at the San Antonio Light newspaper and, later, The Sun Chronicle in Attleboro.

Rick was a Texan through and through, regardless of where he lived.

Wherever he moved, he brought his corner of Texas with him, as well as the ability to make exceptional fajitas and beans.

When he left Texas, and his job as an editor at the Light, Rick moved to Attleboro. He spent the rest of his career at The Sun Chronicle working as the main writer for the newspaper's Sunday edition with his in-depth, carefully reported and written stories gracing the cover of each Sunday Sun Chronicle for more than a decade.

He later became the managing night editor. His articles earned him a number of journalism awards throughout his career.

Rick was a beloved member of several families including the Weatherbee family, the Escondo family, the Lewis family, the Lightsey family, the Waddicor family and all of their extended family members.

He shared their milestones - births, deaths, weddings, funerals, family holidays and vacations and will always be Uncle Rick to them.

Rick cherished his time at the Weatherbee summer home in Jamestown, R.I., where he would go most summer weekends with his cat, a Russian blue named Reb. After Reb died, he adopted another Russian blue cat named Rex and a roly-poly tuxedo cat named Tobie, who he has left to his dear friends, Karen and Tom.
