Stephen Newman Obituary

Stephen J. Newman, 84, of Seekonk, MA and formerly of Attleboro, MA., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 7, 2024. He was the beloved husband of Karen L. Newman (Gallup). They were happily married for 24 years.

Born on October 25, 1939 in Providence, RI., he was the son of the late Louis and Edith (Shapiro) Newman.

Stephen "Coach" completed his high school education at Classical High School in Providence, Rhode Island, graduating in 1957. He subsequently enrolled at the University of Rhode Island where he earned a bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts in 1961. He honorably served in the Army during Vietnam. He then earned his Master's Degree in Education from Bridgewater State in 1971. Over the course of 37 years, he served as a teacher, Dean of Students, and Track Coach at Attleboro High School. He has the honor of having the Attleboro High School track named after him which represents all of the accomplishments of the athletes that he coached. He later coached track at Wheaton College in the early 90s.

Steve was the type of person who was happiest when giving back to the community. In the mid 90s, he took great pride in being the Director of the Attleboro Teen Center. There he made a positive impact on countless young people while making lifelong friends. In 2001, he transitioned to Bishop Feehan High School, where he taught Sociology and History until his retirement 13 years later.

The world is a better place because of Steve Newman, a truly selfless, kindhearted, man who always thought of others before himself.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his loving children, Eric D. Newman and his wife Roberta "Bobbi" of North Billerica, MA., Adam M. Newman and his wife Lynn of Pawtucket, RI., and Joshua T. Newman and his wife Kate of Somerset, MA., and step-children, Patrick R. Whalen and his wife Denise of Fairfield, CT., and Meghan K. Whalen and her spouse Vannak Sao of Seekonk, MA. He is also survived by 10 cherished grandchildren and two dear nieces, Lori and Jill. He was the devoted brother of the late Maurice "Corky" Newman.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend Visitation on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, from 9:00 am until 11:00 am followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00am in the "Memorial Chapel" of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Avenue, Village of Attleboro Falls, North Attleboro, MA. Our Deepest Sympathy to Mrs. Newman, Family, Friends and Colleagues.
Steve was an incredibly wonderful person; one who gave so much of himself to his students, athletes & as a consummate mentor to so many at AHS & the Community.
I enjoyed so many interactions with him during our time at AHS...as did Chad while he was a member of the track team.
Steve was an inspiration to everyone...a one in a million guy!
Steve will always be so fondly remembered.
We are very saddened on his passing& so sorry for your loss.

Mrs. Newman, Adam, and family - my love and warm wishes. Coach Newman was a great mentor and guide to me during high school, and I´ve thought of him many times over the years. I always smile when I remember his timeless words of wisdom: "It´s a definite maybe." Our best to you and all your loved ones.

Once a coach at Bishop Feehan, I had many encounters with Steve. He was a true gentleman and always appreciated fair play and humility.

Steve was a dear friend in junior high, at Classical, and in the Boy Scouts. He was instrumental in my decision to attend Classical. On the track team, he was our best high jumper and a member of a great mile relay team. I was not surprised when he went into professional coaching, or at his great success in that field. It was a tragedy that in his final years he suffered from Alzheimer´s; he deserved much better.
My sincerest condolences to Karen and Steve's children.
