Gwendolyn Thacker Binnicker
NORWAY -- It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gwendolyn Thacker Binnicker, 90, a beloved mother, wife, and teacher, who left us on November 10, 2023. She was the wife of the late William "Bill" Binnicker, Sr.
A celebration of life will be held at 3:30pm, Sunday, November 19, 2023 at St. John's United Methodist Church in Norway, SC.
Gwen was born in Norway, SC, a daughter of the late Robert Hiram Thacker and Julia Williamson Thacker. She dedicated her life to enriching the lives of those around her through her unwavering love, compassion, and service to others. Gwen was a beacon of inspiration in the field of education. She graduated as Salutatorian in 1951 from Norway High School and graduated with honors from Winthrop University in 1955 in physical education where she went on to become a distinguished alumna. Gwen taught eight years in Charlotte, NC, where she had the pleasure of teaching and later reconnecting with the "Golden Girls", a group of her former players. She taught thirty years in Orangeburg at both the high school and middle school level. Gwen coached numerous teams through the years with eleven championships in volleyball, basketball, and track and field. Her former students describe her as fun, encouraging, motivating, enthusiastic and an inspiration. Many would say she was their favorite teacher. It wasn't uncommon for her to get a phone call, a card or even a visit from one of her former students.
Gwen's passion for teaching extended beyond the classroom, touching the lives of countless young people who remember her not only as an educator but also as a mentor and friend. She was active at St John's U.M.C. in Norway, SC where she led the youth group and taught Sunday School for many years. Gwen always made you feel like you were the most important person in the world. She had an eternally positive outlook on life and encouraged and inspired generations. Her thank you notes were EPIC.
As a swimming instructor, Gwen shared her love for the water with generations of learners. Her patient guidance and infectious enthusiasm created a nurturing environment where her students not only learned to swim but also gained confidence and a lifelong love for the water. If you lived in Orangeburg County, it was likely that you learned to swim from "Miss Gwen."
A woman of grace and intellect, Gwen was a devoted mother and wife who loved the Lord and was grateful for the many blessings in her life, especially her family and friends. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and a commitment to the betterment of those around her. In addition to her husband, Gwen was predeceased by two grandchildren, Addison and Sam Binnicker; and brother, Robert Thacker. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Gwen is survived by her three sons, William (Robin) of Daufuskie Island, Robbie (Allyson) of Easley, SC, and Todd (Carrie) of Anderson, SC; eight grandchildren, Ainsley (Trey) Herndon, Griffin Binnicker, Elizabeth Boedeker, Hanna Binnicker, John Rozakos, Hope Binnicker, Anthony Rozakos, Braden Binnicker, and Hayes Binnicker; and two great grandchildren, Bridget and Arden Herndon.
Donations may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church, 217 St. Johns Ave., Norway, S.C. 29113.
May Gwen Binnicker rest in eternal peace, her spirit living on in the memories and hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have shared in her journey.
