James Bookhart Obituary

James Avery Bookhart

September 16, 1943 - March 14, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Avery Bookhart, who left us on March 14, 2025. Avery was a beloved father and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Born on September 16, 1943, he was the youngest son of the late Leila Belle Browning Bookhart and Marion Lee Bookhart, Sr. He is predeceased by his brother Marion Lee Bookhart, Jr. And sister-in-law Peggy Bookhart, and their son David Bookhart, brother-in-law Keitt Brandenburg.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Linda and daughter Patti Ellis (Jason), grandchildren Jacob and Ayden, his two sisters, Dorothy J. Young of Moncks Corner and Shirley B. Brandenburg of Elloree.

Avery also leaves behind nephews Marion Lee "Pee Wee" Bookhart III (Sheryl), Donald Brandeburg, Carl Brandenburg (Alice) and nieces Kay B Wolfe (Robert), Terry Stoudemire, Lisa Bohannon, and Deborah Engbrock.

Avery lived a full life dedicated to hard work and taking care of his family. He spent over 50 years working alongside his late brother-in-law Keitt Brandenburg. When not working, Avery enjoyed working with his hands and seeing friends at the flea market on Saturdays.

At the request of Avery and his family, funeral services were held privately on Tuesday, March 18. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Elloree Heritage Museum & Cultural Center at 2714 W. Cleveland Street, Elloree, SC 29047.

Mr. Avery was such a a nice gentleman. I knew him from the Orangeburg Flea Market. He had such a wonderful gift of making the miniature knives from unusual items. I once told him he needed to teach someone this art so it could be passed on to further generations. He was such a a modest man about his skill. He would always stop by our table to let us see his latest creation. He will most definitely be missed as a patron at the Orangeburg Flea Market.
