Alton - Alvin Ray Elkins, 83, passed away at 4:52 a.m. Friday, November 3, 2023 at Alton Memorial Hospital with his family by his side. He was born June 6, 1940 in McClure, IL, the son of Beulah (Lindsey) and Ray Elkins who passed away early in Alvin's life. Alvin was raised by his aunt and uncle, Dorothy and Henry "Chick" Leady. Alvin retired from Laclede Steel and filled his time with his family, his church, St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Alton, where he was active serving on Vestry, ECM, and many committees, also serving as Rectors Warden. His other interests included hunting, fishing and being active in Alton Wood River Sportsman's Club serving as President three times and on many committees. Alvin and Rosalie loved spending time with each other, their children and grandchildren and great grandchildren. On December 30, 1958 he married the former Rosalie Tate. He is survived by his wife, Rosalie, of 65 years. Also surviving is a daughter, Kimberly Winkler (Steve) of Godfrey, a son, Bryan Elkins (Ron Hamakawa) of Seattle, WA, two grandchildren, Matthew Winkler of Godfrey and Natalie Winkler of Godfrey, and three great grandchildren, McKenna, Calvin and Elias Winkler. He is also survived by two brothers, Joe Jenner (Ina) of Pocahantas, IL, and Loy Elkins of Mississippi, brother-in-law, Walter Tate (Linda), sister-in-law, Ann Childers, many nieces and nephews and a special cousin, Carol Carpunky (Jerry). Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bob Elkins and three sisters, Rosene, Marie and Bonnie and nephew, Terry Elkins. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Alton. Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
