HOWARD A. FOLLOWELL
EDWARDSVILLE — Howard A. Followell, beloved husband of Lestene D. Followell, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015.
Howard was born in 1921, to William Ezra and Elizabeth Ebel Followell, both deceased. One sister, Wilma Keele Nixon, preceded him in death. Howard was married to Neoma Boxley from 1944 to 1986. Loving Father to Kathryn A. Followell, of Edwardsville, Ill., David A. (Brenda Izen) Followell, Glencoe, Mo.; loving grandfather to Carl, Cassie, Christian, Acha, Alex and Bridget; one great-grandson Alex; one great-granddaughter, Avery; and dear niece Mary Elizabeth (Donald) Albracht. He also leaves three stepdaughters, Emily D. Rosencrans, Lake Forest, Ill., Gina D. (Bill) Smutz, Sunset Hills, Mo., and Dee C. Duncan; Kirkwood Mo., eight stepgrandchildren: Mark, Noah, Jacob, Anne, Sarah, John, David, Joe and Caroline; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Taylor Smutz.
Mr. Followell graduated from Chesterfield High School in Chesterfield, Ill., in 1939. He attended college in Greely, Colo., and graduated from SIUE. He had a great love of flying. He was a veteran of World War II. During the war he served as a flight instructor, teaching Army Air Corps Cadets to fly.
After the war he was employed by Standard Oil Company of Indiana until 1964. He was employed by Southern Illinois University Edwardsville from 1964 until his retirement in 1991.
Mr. Followell was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Edwardsville, Ill., and a Ruling Elder in the Presbyterian Church USA. He loved music and continued to play the piano until the time of his death. He was a member and supporter of both the Friends of Music and Friends of the Library at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 14, at First Presbyterian Church in Edwardsville, Ill., gathering for family and friends will be from 10a.m. until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that all remember our veterans.
Memorials may be made to, Friends of Music or Friends of the Library at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Illinois.

Mr. Followell was a cool guy who always greeted me with a warm smile and a firm handshake. I will always remember his kindness and great sense of style.
