Lawrence Mastroleo Obituary

Lawrence "Larry" Mastroleo, born January 16, 1933, on the Northside of Syracuse, passed away peacefully surrounded by family. He was the youngest of three children of the late Stephen and Lena Mastroleo and was preceded in death by his brothers, Stephen Jr. and Raymond.
Larry attended Syracuse public schools and graduated from Vocational High School in the Class of 1950. After working as a construction laborer, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, proudly serving his country from 1953 to 1955. Upon completing his service, he pursued his education at Syracuse University, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education in 1959 from both the School of Music and the School of Education.
He dedicated his career to the Syracuse Public School system, teaching music for 29 years before his retirement. He was a proud member of the New York State Teachers Union as well as the Syracuse Musicians Union. Beyond his teaching, Larry had a lifelong love of flying; he received his private pilot's license in 1968 and was a member of the Camillus Flying Club.
In 1998, Larry married Rosemary Loftus, a fellow educator in the North Syracuse School System. Upon their retirement, the couple moved to Naples, Florida, where they spent 20 wonderful years together. Rosemary preceded him in death in 2021.
Larry is survived by his stepson, Jason R. Loftus; daughter-in-law, Eileen Loftus; grandson, Aidan Loftus; granddaughter, Erica Loftus; sisters-in-law, Ann Mastroleo and Maureen Jaynes; brother-in-law, Jerry Jaynes; as well as several nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory. A man devoted to education, music, and family, Larry will be remembered for his kindness, wit, and passion for life.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, 12:30 p.m. at St. Joseph's Church, Camillus. Interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Aweeeee Rest In Peace Mr Masterleo. You were on of the best music teachers at Franklin Elementary School. You taught my brother Dave and I for Saxaphone. I brought you back The Carta Siciliana when we went to Sicly. I was so happy whenI gave it to you I knew you would have loved it and the expression on your face made my heart so happy. I was only 9 years old and often wondered through the years how youwere doing. Sad to know you have passed away. You will definitely be missed and I hope someone takes care of the Sicilian Cart for you. Hugs and kisses to you and your family.
Love your favorite student,
Sylvia Patane

So long, second cousin. Now you´re with all the other Mastroleo´s we so sorely miss, and occasionally grieve. I remember well uncle Steve and aunt Lena, your dad´s peculiar laugh, and mom´s gentle spirit. I saw much of aunt Lena in you. The women in our family, now with you, couldn´t have been more loving.

As a boy, and second cousin, I recall my parents (Joe & Georgette) speaking admirably and fondly of
you, as I believe you were the first (only?) first cousin to be college educated. Many of the second cousins followed suit in that regard, a highly prized attainment in first and second generation Italian households.

My first memories of you were playing at weddings, and your singing impersonations of Johnny Ray, rending your shirt, as was Ray´s style. Can´t count the number of times your former students, asked if I was related to you, themselves having the most praiseworthy of things to say about you as their teacher. It always made me proud to be a Mastroleo. My dad was always proud to be of that heritage and reputation, and didn´t want us kids sullying it.

At such times I reflect on how much, and how many of you now gone, especially extended family, is a part of my character, and emotional landscape.

You were are great and kind example to us all, Larry. My only regret is that I didn´t get to tell you as much, and others who have likewise passed, in person.
