Mildred Pauline Scott
Nutwood - Mildred Pauline Scott, 100, went home to be with the Lord at 4:11 p.m., Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at Jerseyville Manor. She was born on January 5, 1925, in Hampton, Virginia, and was the last surviving of five children born to the late Auty Reedy and Ida Ruth (Ramsey) Matthews. On August 19, 1942, in St. Charles, Missouri, she married the love of her life, Robert Lee "Bob" Scott and together they were the parents of seven children. Mildred's working years reflected her strength, compassion, and perseverance. She began her career with Olin Corporation, eventually finding her calling in the healthcare field. In 1965, she began her long and meaningful career as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She cared for countless individuals and families through her years at Garnett's Nursing Home in Jerseyville, Calhoun Nursing and Rehab Center in Hardin, and later at Jersey Care Center. When the Calhoun facility reopened after the flood of 1993, Mildred returned and continued serving others until her well-earned retirement at age 72. A woman of quiet faith and Methodist roots, Mildred found joy in the simple, steady rhythms of life. She enjoyed reading and working puzzles, and she cherished every chance to gather her family around her kitchen table. Her home was the kind of place where stories were told and generations came together - children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren - all feeling the warmth of her love. Second only to her family was her love for the St. Louis Cardinals. From listening to games on AM radio in her younger years to cheering them on from her living room in later ones, Mildred was a loyal fan through and through. She marked her calendar for spring training every year and delighted in attending games whenever she could. Her legacy will forever live on in the family she raised, the people she cared for, and the example she set through her strength, compassion, and unwavering love. She had a gentle way of making those around her feel valued and at home, whether through a warm meal, a kind word, or simply her steady presence. Hers was a life rich with meaning, built on faith, family, and quiet perseverance. Surviving are her daughters, Joyce Pieper of Fieldon, Marcia "Susie" Holden and her companion, John Droege, of Grafton, and Janice (John) Sunderland of Elsah; her son, Philip Scott of Winthrop Harbor; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Joan Scott of Tucson, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob; her father, Auty Reedy; her mother and step-father, Ida Ruth and T.K. Matthews; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Gary Scott and Ronnie and Virginia Scott; a daughter, Carla Breitweiser; and two granddaughters, Jenifer Scott and Candice Schaaf.
