Sue Rives
Edwardsville - Sue Rives, age 75, passed peacefully on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at Alhambra Rehab & Healthcare. Born March 6, 1950, in Wood River, she was the daughter of Ethel (Lucas) McCoy of Edwardsville and the late James McCoy.
Sue's greatest gift was the warmth she shared with everyone she met. She was known for her constant smile, her kind spirit, and her willingness to put others before herself. Whether it was family, friends, students, or colleagues, Sue gave her time and love freely, always lifting others up with her encouragement and laughter.
She is survived by her mother, Ethel; her loving companion, Leroy Beck of Edwardsville; her children, Christi DeCuir of Bellingham, Washington, Luke and Chrissy Rives of Edwardsville, Kathie and Chad Opel of Edwardsville, Andy Beck of Granite City, and Sarah and Sam Brotherton of Green Park, Mo. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Soren DeCuir, Lena DeCuir, Boden Rives, Stevie Rives, Sami Opel, Ellie Opel, Leo Brotherton, and Jay Brotherton. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Randy and Lori McCoy of East Alton, along with countless other family members and lifelong friends who were blessed to know her.
Sue dedicated her career to education, last serving as principal at Lewis and Clark Junior High in Wood River for 18 years until her retirement in 2010. Her students and staff remember her not only as a leader but as a mentor and friend who truly cared for their well-being and success.
To Sue, family and friendships were treasures, and she cherished every moment spent with them. Her legacy is one of love, kindness, and joy-a reminder of the power of a smile and a generous heart.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. A celebration of Sue's life will be held from 12 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at Wigglers in Holiday Shores.
In honor of Sue, please take a moment to hug your children and grandchildren a little tighter, just as she would have done.
