Arlene Shemonski, devoted wife, mother and grandmother, passed Away peacefully Tuesday morning at Marywood Heights Nursing Home in Scranton after a lengthy illness. Her husband is Richard Shemonski of Jessup.
Born June 21, 1943, in Syracuse, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late George and Bernetta Nole Schirra. She was educated in Scranton public schools and spent most of her life in Jessup where she devoted her life to fulfilling the reason she was on this earth - to be the wife, mother and grandmother to the family she created. Nourished and became the center of.
She was a wonderful cook who enjoyed preparing big family meals, especially on the holidays and her grandchildren will attest to her spaghetti being the best.
Arlene, (Mumween to the grands), was an avid sports fan but only if it involved her children or grandchildren. And she loved her Saturday night dances in Dupont, where she tried to wear out the floor and her shopping sprees to Boscov's where she never met a bargain rack that she could pass up. She was a huge Tom Brady fan, but she was most devoted to her disabled daughter Lee Ann, whom she loved and unselfishly cared for for more than 50 years. Taking care of her disabled daughter was considered her greatest accomplishment.
Along with her husband Richard, she is survived by a daughter, Denise Puthorosky and husband, John, Olyphant; son, Paul, at home; daughter, Lee Ann, Dickson City; and son, Michael and wife, Karen, Jessup; also, her adored grandchildren, Ashley Puthorosky, Olyphant; Izabella, Ryley and Michael Noah Shemonski, Jessup; sisters, Pat Gaul, Scranton; and Debbie Smith, Olyphant; and former sister-in-law, Mary Szymonski-Brown, Monroe, N.C. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews; and her lifelong friend, Lee Galovic and husband, John, Eynon.
The family would like to express their thanks to all of Arlene's wonderful friends and neighbors who supported her throughout these last few years along with the caring nurses, aides and support staff of the Hospice of the Sacred Heart and Marywood Heights Nursing Home who gave her loving care and comfort.
The funeral will be held Friday from the Louis M. Margotta Funeral Home, 511 Church St., Jessup, with a blessing service at 11 a.m. Interment, St. John's Cemetery, Jessup.
Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday morning from 10 until time of service at the funeral home. For online condolences, visit funeral home website.
