Betty "Barbara" Sokolowski, 83, a lifelong Old Forge resident, died Wednesday in the Regional Hospital of Scranton following an acute illness. She was the widow of Walter Sokolowski, her husband of 46 years, who preceded her in death on March 31, 2010.
Born in Old Forge, daughter of the late Stanley and Johanna Romey Pepsin, she was a 1955 graduate of Old Forge High School. She was employed as a seamstress in the area garment industry and also worked for Kmart in Moosic for a 20-year period.
Barbara, also affectionately known as "Curly," had a keen eye for gardening and anything pertaining to flowers. She was loved and made friends everywhere she went. Everyone who knew her was familiar with her loving and faithful companion, her dog, Katie.
Above all, she was a tremendously caring mother who loved nothing more than taking care of her family. Her love for and deep bond with her children and grandchildren will echo throughout their lives, leaving a lasting legacy that will be cherished for years to come.
Surviving are three sons, Walter Sokolowski and wife, Donna of Scott Twp., Michael Sokolowski and wife, Lori of Spring Brook Twp., and Bobby Sokolowski of Old Forge; a daughter, Christine Fritz and husband, Tim of Honesdale; six grandchildren, Michael Sokolowski Jr., Andrea Sokolowski, Austin Sokolowski, Robert Clarke, Stephanie Williams and Alicia Welby; a great-grandson, Cole Sokolowski; a brother, Paul Pepsin and wife, Carol of Old Forge; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Pepsin, Old Forge; and nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her brother, Stanley "Bob" Pepsin.
The viewing and funeral with a Roman Catholic blessing service by the Rev. Phillip J. Sladicka will be privately held at the convenience of the family. As promised, a gathering celebrating her life will be held at a later date. No one loved a good party more than Curly.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Dessin Animal Shelter, 138 Miller Drive, Honesdale, PA 18431 (www.dessinshelters.com).
