Dave left this world suddenly on July 15, 2024, after returning from a trip to Scandinavia.
He was born in Jermyn, Pa., the youngest of three children from the late Vincent Scarpetta Sr. and the late Helen Mikuzki Scarpetta. He attended Scranton Preparatory School where he excelled in golf, including winning three Jackman Memorial titles. After graduation, he attended the University of Oklahoma, where he walked onto the varsity golf team. Dave, who was well known for his smart and often dark humor, once said, "golfers only have two emotions: rage and suppressed rage." Despite these emotions throughout his golf career, Dave won several titles over the course of decades in the local area with multiple partners: Dennis Corvo, Bud Rogalla, Dennis Sebastianelli and his older brother, Vince Scarpetta, to name a few.
Dave was the proud owner of Bingham's Family Restaurant; he loved his customers and staff dearly. He purchased the restaurant in the 1990s and managed to navigate the business successfully through an intentionally set fire that required a full re-build, and the coronavirus pandemic which affected businesses all over the country. Dave was always grateful for his community's support and the loyalty of his customers and staff. His family intends to maintain the restaurant and keep Dave's legacy going.
In addition to golf and gastronomy, Dave was a patron of the arts, fond of several mediums including film, theatre and sculpture. His zest for living led to numerous adventures around the globe, arranged by his dear friend and travel agent, Lynn Pearl. He enjoyed experiencing other cultures and countries and sharing those experiences with his friends and family. He had an uncanny ability to make the best of any situation and to always be able to laugh at himself; his laughter was contagious to everyone he met. Dave took the motto "give freely of what you find" very seriously and was endlessly generous to those in his life. Although he was taken far too early from this world, his loving, selfless heart left a beacon of light for all in the community.
Lastly, Dave was incredibly devoted to his family. He is survived by his daughter, Ashley Maconeghy, and her husband, Devin. Dave was the proudest Pop to his grandson, DJ; and two granddaughters, Isabella and Anastasia. Dave is also survived by his paternal aunt; a sister, Mary; a brother, Vince; several cousins, nieces and nephews. He will be missed dearly.
To honor David's request, there will be no formal funeral service. A celebration of life will be held at a future date with details to be determined. In the meantime, you are invited to privately celebrate Dave's memory in your own ways, including with a piece of pie.

While I hadn't seen David in quite some time (although my family enjoyed breakfast at his restaurant when we were up that way), my cousin will always have a place in my heart. My deepest sympathy goes out to his daughter and grandchildren, my cousins Mary and Vincent. May your memories of him bring you comfort and peace in the days ahead.

I grew up with Dave in Jermyn...our backyards met. Came to know him as a friend when our paths crossed again. My heartfelt sympathy to Ashley and her family and to Vincent and Mary as well. RIP Dave and thanks for the memories.
