Edward J. "Poppy" Woloszyn, 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 5, at Allied Services Hospice Center. He was the son of the late Elias and Catherine (Chiosmac) Woloszyn, and the husband of Helen (Purvin) Woloszyn. The couple recently celebrated 69 years of marriage together.
Edward was born in Taylor, Pa. (Lincoln Heights section). He was a graduate of Taylor High School, class of 1947, and was a 45-year employee of the USPS. Edward was a veteran of the Korean War and served with the Medical Company, 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. Due to his heroic actions to save a fallen corpsman in which he himself was wounded, he received an honorable Purple Heart, as well as the Ambassador for Peace Medal.
He was an avid fan of all sports, from local Little League and high school teams to the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. He bonded with many over his love of the game, regardless of the team they cheered for.
Ed's kindness radiated to all those around him, and he was considered a friend to all who met him. He loved tending to his garden and cooking tomato sauce with his wife. No Easter or Christmas celebration was complete without Poppy's fresh horseradish, which could certainly clear a room.
He enjoyed the simple blessings in life - his family, a hot meal, Lawrence Welk and Saturday night polka on the TV. He was known to want nothing for Christmas but a scratch-off lottery ticket. His smile was contagious and comforting, which his family will remember fondly forever.
Poppy thoroughly enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. It made their day to see Poppy in the bleachers, rooting them on for the hometown win. His pride in his family was endless.
Edward is survived by his loving wife, Helen; as well as sons, Edward (Susan), Gary (Marita), Eugene (Claire); and daughter, Carol (Edward). Also surviving are three grandchildren, Christina (Nathaniel), Mia and Gary Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Bennett; as well as several nieces and nephews; and extended family members.
Edward was preceded in death by brothers, Frank and Walter; also, sisters, Mary Zabielski, Angie Frankowski, Lottie Jesuit, an infant sister, Stella, Jane Smith, Julie Tomeo, Bernice Kowalski, Florence Woloszyn and Phyllis Karpinski.
Family and friends are invited to attend Ed's Mass of Christian Burial, which will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church, 1309 W. Locust St., Scranton, by the Rev. Samuel Ferretti. Interment with military honors will be at Cathedral Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 at the church.
In lieu of flowers, due to the Lenten season, please consider making a memorial contribution in Edward's memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.

I, too, remember Mr. Woloszyn's smile, having grown up on Loomis Avenue.
My condolences to Carol, my childhood friend, and the rest of the family.
