Esther Leone, 79, of Scranton, passed away at Linwood Nursing Home in Scranton on Jan. 11, 2022, after a battle with cancer.

Born on Sept. 13, 1942, in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Florence Sconda Leone. Esther was a longtime member of St. Ann's Basilica in Scranton. Esther graduated from Scranton Technical High School and was the proprietor of E. Gilarde Construction and Gilarde Environmental Management.

She was a kind and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend who will be dearly missed. Esther was a survivor, a strong woman who would give you the shirt off her back. She dedicated many years to raising her family. She particularly enjoyed spending time with family and friends and supporting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the pursuit of their dreams and passions. She had many hobbies and interests. She had a life long passion for cooking, history, politics and religion. She enjoyed spending several hours a day talking on the phone with family.

Surviving are her children, Adriane York, her caregiver, and husband, Dominick III, Moosic; Sheri Connelly, Old Forge; John Gilarde and wife, Kristine, Covington Twp.; Ignatius Gilarde Jr. and wife, Sandra, Clarks Summit; her grandchildren, Myah York, Danielle and Ciara O'Malley, Olivia Schultes, Grace Gilarde (deceased), Nora Gilarde, Katie Little, Nello Gilarde; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John Leone; a sister, Marion Merli; a son-in-law, Hugh Connelly; and former husband, Ignatius J. Gilarde Sr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Ann's Basilica Parish, 1233 St. Ann's St., Scranton. Condolences will be from 10 a.m. until time of Mass at the church on Saturday. Interment will be private at a later date.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of James M. Margotta Funeral Home, Peckville. All attending are asked to follow COVID-19 protocols and wear a mask.
