Eugene George "Gene" Opsasnick, 89, of North Abington Twp. died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2023. Surviving is his loving wife of 58 years, the former Betty L. O'Koren.
Gene was born in Dunmore to the late Anna and Michael Opsasnick. An exceptionally fine carpenter, he was valedictorian of Johnson Trade School Class of 1950 and for over 50 years lived in the house he designed and built for his wife and family. After serving in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean conflict, Gene earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Scranton. He then began his career in education and taught English within the Montrose Area School District for 30 years.
He also served in his community as roadmaster and zoning officer of North Abington for more than 33 years. While Gene enjoyed teaching, he loved the outdoors, gardening, woodworking, and the Boston Red Sox. He was a devout Byzantine Catholic and a member of the Scranton Deanery choir. His quick wit and humor never faded; even in the most stressful situations, he was able to make someone smile.
Gene is survived by his son, Eugene and daughter-in-law Stephanie Opsasnick of Cupertino, Calif.; his daughter, Laura N. Venditti and son-in-law Dr. Charles P. Venditti of Potomac, Md. as well as many nieces, nephews, and cherished family members. Gene is grandfather, "Zedo," to six grandchildren, Alexis, Annika, and Cheston Opsasnick and Francesca, Kara, and Livia Venditti.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph, Paul, Michael, and sister Mary.
Divine Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, East Drinker Street in Dunmore. Interment, St. Michael's Cemetery, Dunmore. There are no public calling hours.
