Gerard Jacquinot Obituary

Gerard Jacquinot, 93, of South Scranton, died Sunday after a brief stay at Marywood Heights. His wife of 62 years is the former Mary Ann Gilmartin.

Born in the Marvine section of Scranton, he was the fifth child of the late Patrick and Mary Sullivan Hickey. Following the death of his mother, he became the son of the late Charles and Alice Dempsey Jacquinot. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish until its closing, and later St. Paul of the Cross and St. Theresa of Calcutta Parish.

A 1949 graduate of Scranton Technical High School, Jerry was a United States Army veteran. He was employed as a union lather and was a member of the Lathers Union, Local 4, where he served as union president. He was a 70-year member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 445. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Van Mor Plastering Co. for 28 years. He was very proud of his trade as he had the opportunity to work on many public buildings throughout Northeast Pennsylvania, including churches, schools and hospitals.

Humble and hardworking, Jerry was supportive of many community organizations. As a universal blood donor, he never missed an opportunity to donate. He was honored to be able to use his skills to help build quality and lasting homes for his family and many others. He was proud of his Irish heritage, known as a loyal friend and good neighbor, dedicated to his family and devoted to his Catholic faith.

Also surviving are his children, Michele Ditchkus and husband, John; Anne Rizk and husband, Toufic; Gerard Jacquinot and wife, Susan; and Sister Maryalice Jacquinot, I.H.M.; his grandchildren, Nina Rizk and husband, Andrew Choma; Victoria Ruth and husband, Andrew; Michael Rizk and Brie Baumert; Emma Rizk; Alexandra Deuel and husband, Tyler; Catherine Rizk and Anna Jacquinot; a brother, Thomas Hickey and wife, Jane; a sister-in-law, Gilda Gilmartin; and a brother-in-law, Michael Gilmartin and wife, Nada; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Joseph Hickey, Carl Sullivan, Alice Babinec, Anne Jacquinot, Jean McHugh and Evelyn Quell; and a brother-in-law, Robert Gilmartin.

The funeral will be Saturday with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Mary, Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 316 William St., to be celebrated by the Rev. Cyril Edwards, pastor. Interment will be private. Friends may call Friday, 4 to 7 p.m., at the Neil W. Regan Funeral Home, 1900 Pittston Ave. Those attending Mass on Saturday are asked to proceed directly to the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Center, 2010 Adams Ave. (www.stjosephscenter.org/donations).

I was a young high school student when I met Jerry. I was working summers then with my Dad as an apprentice lather, and Jerry was the youngest member of the lather's union. Jerry was a hardworking, honest, really good man! I always enjoyed his company.

While attending da U (1983-1987), I was fortunate to meet a townie by the name of Gerard Jacquinot. Before long, Gerard introduced me to his dad, "Mr. Jacquinot", and for the friendships that ensued, I will be forever grateful. Mr Jacquinot (and of course his lovely wife Mary Ann) opened their home to me and Jerry always made me feel as though I was a part of his wonderful family. Whether it was for a Sunday family dinner, a Saturday afternoon "coaching session" before heading out for the evening or an any day visit to just get away for it all, Mr. Jacquinot always greeted me with a firm handshake, a smile and a whole lot of clever wit.
I always admired the passion, commitment and love he had for his profession, his church and his family. He was truly a special man.
To Gerard and the entire Jacquinot family, may your hearts soon be filled with memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.
With love, Scott & Kiki
