James Abda Obituary

Cpl. James M. Abda Sr., 90, of West Scranton, passed away peacefully at home Friday night. He was the husband of the former Charlotte Simon, and they were married for 68 years.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late John and Diamond Smith Abda. He was a member of St. Joseph's Melkite Greek Catholic Church in Scranton and was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Before his retirement in 1991, Jim was a Scranton motorcycle police officer for 28 years. He belonged to many organizations, including the Fraternal Order of Police, the Scranton Police Department Family Assistance Fund and the Disabled American Veterans.

He was a musician with Orlando Muzzi Band and the LJJ's Band. Jim was a kind, caring and loving man who adored his family.

Also surviving are three sons, James Abda Jr. and his wife, Trudy, Scranton; Richard Abda, St. Rose, La.; and Ronald Abda and his wife, Denise, Clarks Summit; his loving grandchildren, Melissa Abda, Christine Abda, Lauren Abda, Ashley Abda and Ronald Abda Jr.; two great-grandsons, Nicholas and Tyler Zamerowski; a brother, Dr. John Abda, Clarks Summit; several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, William, Joseph and Albert.

His family would like to thank his caregivers, Connie Otley, Betsy Legos, Laura James and Jennifer Kuchwara for the care and compassion provided to Jim, as well as Dr. Thomas Minora, his staff and the hospice nurses.

The funeral will be Tuesday from Savino Traditional Funerals and Cremation Care, 157 S. Main Ave., Scranton, Carl J. Savino Jr., supervisor, with services at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Melkite Greek Catholic Church, 130 N. St. Frances Cabrini Ave., Scranton, by the Rev. Christopher Manuele, pastor. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in West Scranton.

Friends may call Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. All those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church on Tuesday morning.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Melkite Greek Catholic Church Building Fund, 130 N. St. Frances Cabrini Ave., Scranton, PA 18504.
