James Dougherty Obituary

James D. Dougherty Jr., 56, of Scranton, died Sunday at home. He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Stanvitch Dougherty. Wed on July 2, 1999, the couple was married 15 years.

Born on Jan. 20, 1958, and raised in Dunmore, he was the son of the late James D. Sr. and Mary Flynn Dougherty. A graduate of the former Bishop O'Hara High School, class of 1976, he then graduated from Johnson Technical School. A master carpenter, he owned and operated Dougherty Construction Co. of Scranton for 30 years. An outdoorsman who had many great memories of spending time at his cabin, he was also an avid hunter who was a 37-year member of the Rod & Gun Club. The greatest joy in his life came while spending time with his grandchildren. Though he passed away unexpectedly Sunday evening, his family finds comfort in knowing he will love them "always and forever."

He is also survived by four stepchildren, Thomas Evans and fiancée, Jessica Capwell, Throop; Joseph Evans and fiancée, Kristen Baun, Scranton; Kristy Berardelli and husband, Joseph, Throop; and Karly Evans-Homer and husband, Christopher, St. Joseph, Mich.; siblings, Michael Dougherty and wife, Carol, Mansfield, Texas; Patricia Lombardo, Dunmore; and Ann Gerrity and husband, Edward, Yardley; six stepgrandchildren, Joseph, Anthony, Constance, Joseph, Emmie and Harper; eight nephews and a niece; a mother-in-law, Sharon Stanvitch; and a sister-in-law, Lisa Stanvitch, both of Scranton.

A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Thursday at 2 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church, 1403 Jackson St., Scranton. Those wishing to attend the funeral are asked to go directly to the church. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Arrangements are under the care of the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 969 Griffin Pond Road, South Abington Twp., PA 18411.
