John Calafut Obituary

John J. Calafut, 85, of Carbondale, died Thursday night at the Forest City Nursing Home.

Born Dec. 8, 1926, in Carbondale, son of the late Frank Calafut and Kathryn Novabilski Calafut Potochak, he was a graduate of the Fell High School, Simpson, and was an Army veteran of World War II, having served with the 346th Harbor Craft Company in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. He was a retired steelworker, having been employed for many years at Harris Steel in South Plainfield, N.J. He was a member of the United Steelworkers union, the Walter Paciga VFW Post 4712 in Simpson and St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale.

He enjoyed fishing and watching movies. He loved watching baseball and always rooted for the underdog in sports. He cherished spending time with his family and friends. He was the most loving and caring grandfather and was like a second father to his grandchildren. Nothing in life gave him greater pleasure than being a part of his grandchildren's lives. He will be deeply missed by them.

He is survived by four grandchildren, Jerome Calafut, Olyphant; Christina Ross and husband, Dan, Kingsley; Jennifer Calafut and fiance, Tracy Hollister, Archbald; and Stacey Kucharski and husband, Jeff, Scott Twp.; two great-grandsons, Zachary John Ross and Jeffrey John Kucharski; two sisters, Nellie Payne, Plainfield, N.J.; and Mary Savage, a resident of the Forest City Nursing Home; a daughter-in-law, Loretta Cowher, Carbondale; several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Jerome Calafut; two brothers, Edward and Frank Calafut; two sisters, Helen Calafut and Sophie Klosky; and a special niece, Joan Klosky.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 9 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Church, 6 N. Church St., Carbondale. Interment with military honors, St. Michael's Cemetery, Simpson.

Friends may call Tuesday, 8:30 to 9 a.m. at the church.

Uncle John was a good Uncle to his nieces and nephews. I'll always remember how he would take us to Newton Lake on Tuesdays for nickle day. We would ride all night.He and Uncle Ed took me to New York City for the day.
