Merrill L. Mayenschein Jr. of Covington Twp. passed away Saturday at Geisinger Community Medical Center after an illness. His wife is the former Catherine Piemontese.
Born Nov. 13, 1942, in Huntington, W.Va., he was the son of the late Merrill and Vada Wilkes Mayenschein. Prior to his retirement, Merrill was employed as purchasing agent and administrator for the Scranton State School for the Deaf. He was a member of Elm Park United Methodist Church.
Upon graduation from high school, Merrill entered the United States Coast Guard where he served aboard the USCGC Sundew and USCGC Basswood throughout the Pacific and Great Lakes. Following his discharge, he attended the University of Scranton where he graduated with a degree in accounting in 1976. Merrill lived a vibrant life, earning his pilot's license, driving race cars and sailing the British Virgin Islands. Despite these experiences, Merrill was humble, finding greatest joy in his family.
