Michael Castaldi Obituary

Michael P. Castaldi Sr. (Mikey), 94, died peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 23, at home surrounded by his family.

Born in the Minooka section of Scranton, son of the late James and Angelina Antonio Castaldi, he attended Minooka High School and was the owner and proprietor of Castaldi's Market. He retired 93 years young. In addition to operating the Beloved Market, he was formally employed for the Scranton School District.

A humble man with a huge heart, Mike was honest, hardworking, kind, patient, loving and selfless who always put others before himself. He was a true servant and a staple to the community. Castaldi's Market was not just a place to shop but a place where people would come to say hello. His customers were like family to him and he always appreciated them! In addition to his fresh meats and homemade sausage, he would celebrate the holidays with his customers traditionally with wine served in Dixie cups. Michael was a lifelong parishioner at Divine Mercy Parish at St. Joseph's Church, a charter member of the Minooka Lions Club and an avid member of the Beavers Club, Minooka, Pa.

He received the Key to the City of Scranton from Mayor James P. Connors in 1990 who also proclaimed May 4 as Mikey Castaldi Day! He also received the Key to the City a second time by Mayor Paige Cognetti upon retirement!

Surviving are his children, Michael P. Castaldi Jr. and wife Nahid, Emmitsburg, Md.; James Castaldi and wife Maureen, Spring Brook Twp.; Deacon Martin Castaldi and wife Renee, Scranton; Joseph Castaldi and wife Rita, Scranton; William Castaldi and wife Danielle, Old Forge; Robert Castaldi and wife Dina, Moosic; eighteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and three expected great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his Beloved wife, Frances H. Mclaughlin Castaldi, who passed away in 1997. He was also preceded in death by brothers; Frederick and Salvatore, sisters; Mary, Grace, Bridget, Margaret, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank first and foremost all of his customers throughout the years, Dr. Patrick Connors, Dr. Lear Von Koch for their impeccable care, the staff at Linwood nursing home, VNA Home Health, and Allied Hospice.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Divine Mercy Parish at St. Joseph's Church, Minooka. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Eagan-Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 2908 Birney Ave., Scranton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Minooka Lions Club, 2734 Birney Ave., Scranton, PA 18505.

It was a pleasure to have known Mike since 1984 and serving his store with baked goods, always looked forward to those Dixie cups, and of course his pizza and hoagies.
My condolences to the family.
