Michael J. Marek Jr.

Michael J. Marek Jr., 45, of Throop, formerly of Jessup, passed away Friday, July 2, 2021, at Hospice of Sacred Heart, Dunmore, after a 24-year-long courageous battle with renal disease and calciphylaxis.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of Sharon (Blasko) Marek, Jessup, and the late Michael J. Marek. He resided in Throop for the last 20 years after moving from Jessup. A 1993 graduate of Valley View High School, he also attended Penn State University. A lifelong techie, he built and repaired computers and was the owner/operator of M&M Sports Cards and More. As a child, he was a member of St. Mary's Assumption Catholic Church.

Also surviving are a sister, Michelle L. Marek, District Heights, Md.; an aunt, Mary Ann Wassil, Inverness, Fla.; uncles, Arthur G. Blasko Jr., Moosic; and Mark Blasko and wife, Beverly, Hughestown; many cousins and a host of lifelong friends. He will be greatly missed by his 18-month-old dog, Minnie. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John and Bernetta Marek; maternal grandparents, Rose and Arthur Blasko; and his beloved dog of 14 years, Sasha.

Michael's life was one to be deeply admired. Since 2001, he has lived independently as a bilateral double amputee. His strength, courage and fierce determination to enjoy life to the fullest was exemplified by his many adventures. He loved sports, music and traveling! A.C., Vegas, Yankee Stadium, Madison Square Garden, Heinz Field, Washington, D.C., and Billy Joel concerts were some of his favorites. Friends and family relied on him for endless hours of help to resolve their computer issues. "Tech support closed permanently" (Quoted at Michael's request).

The family would like to thank Dr. Henry Yeager, who Michael affectionately referred to as "Hank," his nephrologist since 1997, the DaVita team in Dunmore, and Hospice of Sacred Heart for their compassionate care.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday from Louis M. Margotta Funeral Home, 511 Church St., Jessup. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. A brief memorial service will be conducted immediately following visitation at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Entombment, St. Mary's Mausoleum in Montdale.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to NEPA Pet Fund & Rescue, P.O. Box 3953, Scranton, PA 18505, in his memory, because of his love of animals, especially dogs.
